LongEntomology DepartmentWashington State UniversityPullman W.A. 99163-6382(509)335-5504During the 1993 cropping season, aphid populations were monitored on commercialand untreated potato plots grown in the Central Basin of Washington.The first aphid to arrive did not colonize potato and therefore could not transmit PotatoLeaf Roll Virus (PLRV). The first colonizing aphids were the Green Peach Aphidswhich arrived on 2nd of July. Peak immigration did not occur until 22nd July.Virus-free potatoes exposed to immigrating aphids did not become infected with PLRVuntil after 22nd July when most GPA were wingless offspring of the colonists. Theseresults show that in commercial systems, PLRV is most likely transmitted from plantinfested as seed to uninfected plants by wingless aphids. The heavy flight ofimmigrating aphids may occur oyer a period of 3weeks or more and need not becontrolled until most colonizers have landed.117
