Abstracts ofthe 77th Annual Western OrchardPest &Disease Management ConferenceImplementationReduced-riskpest management programs forMI apple, Year 1Peter McGhee, Larry Gut, and Mike HaasMichigan State University, East Lansing, MIAbstract: The goal of this 4-year project is to design and evaluate pest management systemsutilizing reduced-risk tactics that are effective, sustainable, economically viable, and lead toenhanced biological control for eastern apple growers. The overall experimental design was adirect comparison of the effectiveness of anorganophosphate-free vs. OP-based grower standardpest management program. In commercial orchards 10 acres were managed under the soft vs.standard pest management regime. OP free programs relied on IGRs, neonicotinoids,oxadiazines, naturalytes, biopesticides, and pheromone mating disruption. Grower standardprograms relied on OPs, carbamates, and pyrethroids. Pheromone mating disruption wasexcluded fromall grower standard programs. Eachprogram was evaluated in threeregions ofMIand replicated on three farms within each region. Pest management programs without OPs were2-3x more expensive than OPstandard programs. Fruit injury at harvest caused by codling moth,obliquebanded leafroller and oriental fruitmoth varied in these two programs. Some of the mostpromising results were obtained in trials evaluating apple maggot and plum curculio control.ImplementationEasternRAMP: Successes and impediments to implementing non-OPpeach IPM programs inthe East; Year 1Peter W. Mostinsect and mites have adequate reduced-risk control measures. However, some pests such asplum curculio andgreater and lesser peachtree borers do nothave registered or effective non-OPcontrols. We compared reduced risk peach arthropod management programs with side-by-sideconventional peachpest management programs. All 8 study sites, comprising approximately 70acres, required azinphosmethyl rescue treatments for plum curculio.
