Indoxacarb is in the oxadiazine class of chemistry and itworks as a sodium channel blocker. Indoxacarb was registered in the U.S. for use on apples,pears and many other crops in May of 2001. It is a reduced risk pesticide with very lowmammalian toxicity and a benign profile for avian and aquatic toxicity. Indoxacarb is abroadspectrum insecticide with activity on codling moth, white apple leafhopper, pandemisleafroller, western tentiform leafminer, and lacanobia fruitworm.Chemical Control/New ProductsFEEDING ENHANCEMENTS FOR INSECTICIDE TARGETING NEONATELEPIDOPTERAN LARVAEMaciej A. BrownDepartment of Entomology, Washington State University, Pullman, WA, USAWe show that neonates of the codling moth Cydia pomonella (L.) arecapable of feeding and development on apple leaves, and identify granulatedsugar substitute, Sweet'n Low® (1%, w/v), and monosodium glutamate(0.0025%, w/v) as substances that increase leaf feeding in codling mothneonates. In laboratory trials, addition of Sweet'n Low® or monosodiumglutamate to standard concentrations of Success®, a pesticide formulationcontaining Spinosad, significantly increased its efficacy without increasing theamounts of toxic component. However, our field experiments indicate that abetter formulation of feeding stimulant/pesticide combination is needed to protectboth from being washed off from leaves by rain.We also have preliminary data on spatial characteristics of leaf exploratorybehavior, and on glutamate-dependent pharmacology of feeding in codling mothneonates. These data could help to design a proper spray delivery system, andimprove field persistence of identified feeding stimulators.Our data suggest a new strategy for rational pesticide reduction in controlof lepidopteran pests. Our formulation increased the amounts of pesticideingested by stimulation of feeding, thereby showing prospects of decreasing theamounts of toxic ingredients needed in pesticide formulation without affecting itsefficacy.12
