Combs,Entomology Department, NYSAES, Geneva, NY 14456Abstract: This study was conducted from 1999-2001 to compare organophosphate (OP)resistance and control ofOBLR in plots treated with soft insecticides. (OP) resistance remainedstable in field populations ofOBLR during the 3 years of the study. OBLR control in the softplots was better than that obtained with standard treatments. Plum curculio (PC) control was notadequate in most of the soft blocks and in 2001, damage was observed even in blocks that had noPC damage during the first year of the study. This soft insecticide program did not provideadequate control of internal lepidoptera in some of the blocks for multiple seasons, althoughcontrol of the apple maggot was acceptable. Foliar pests such as tentiform leafminers, greenapple aphids, white apple leafhoppers, and mites were not serious problems in the soft pesticideblocks. Tarnished plant bug damage was generally similar in grower's standard programs andthe soft pesticide blocks. Secondary pests, such as rosy apple aphids and the San Jose Scalewere problems in some of the soft pesticide blocks. The overall insect damage in the standardand soft pesticide was fairly similar during all seasons of the 3 year study, except in one orchard,which suffered severe damage from curculio and internal lepidoptera. The costs of insecticidesapplied in the standard and soft pesticide programs were similar.ImplementationTHE WENATCHEE VALLEY PEAR IPM PROJECT (WVPP): 1999-2001Ted AlwayT.C.Alway Consulting, Peshastin, WAAbstract:The WVPP demonstrated that biological control ofkey pests in Wenatchee Valley pearorchards could be increased, developing pest management programs that are equally or moreeffective and economical than the chemically intensive programs commonly used. SixteenD'Anjou pear growers participated overthe three-year period,with over half of the orchardseach year using a soft program(no or very limiteduse ofbroad-spectrum insecticides). Pearpsyllapopulations were higherin the softblocks in the first year,but declined in subsequentyears to levels similar to the conventional blocks. Grapemealybug and spider miteswere lesserproblems in the soft blocks. Pear rustmite increased in many soft blocks. Otherpestswereatsimilar levels between the two treatment regimes. Natural enemies were far higher in the softblocks; the principal ones foundwereDeraeocoris brevis, Campylomma verbasci, lacewings,earwigs and Trechnites sp. Fmit markingwas higher in the first year in the soft blocks, due topear psylla, but damage levelswere similar in later years. Pest control costs averaged $150-$200/ac less each year in the soft blocks.25
