Economic and institutional Constraints to Development of Marine Fish Cage Culture in Viet Nam

Abstract

Vietnam with three-quarters of the country is mountainous and hilly, around 1.4 million ha of inland and coastal waters suitable for aquaculture purposes. In Vietnam, marine fish cage culture has been developed since the 1970s and significant expansion took place in the early 1990s. There are approximately 500 ha of coastal pond culture of marine fish in Vietnam producing more than 1,000 t of products, mainly groupers with a farm gate value of more than VND100 billion (more than US $7 million) in 2003. This paper reviews the current status of marine fish cage culture and identifies the constraints as economic, institution and policy to develop the marine fish cage culture in Viet Nam
