A t f th K L LibAnnouncements from the Kresge Law LibraryStudy RoomsAs we near the final exam period, remember that the Law Library has study roomsavailable for individual and group study. Reservations are highly recommended and mustbe made online. Reservations can be made for up to four hours at a time with onereservation per day, no more than one day in advance. Please be aware, the library Foodand Drink policy also applies in the study rooms (only covered drinks allowed, no food). Tosee study room availability and make a reservation visit the Study Room Reservationwebpage.Food in the Law LibraryA gentle reminder concerning the Food and Drink policy for the Kresge Law Library.Covered drinks are allowed throughout the Law Library, but please leave the lid on if youare sitting at a table to help avoid spills. Light Snacks that are not damaging to thecollection or distracting to others are allowed ONLY in the South Reading Room (adjacentto the Main Reading Room) on the second floor. Please go to the Commons to eat yourmeals (sandwiches, pizza, soup, burgers, fries, salads, etc.) or any food which has astrong odor or that leaves a residue such as grease or crumbs behind. These policies alsoapply in the Law Library study rooms. Please visit the circulation desk to look through our binder that includes severalstudy aid lists arranged by series (Concise Hornbooks, Examples and Explanations,Hornbooks, Nutshells, and the Understanding Series).We also subscribe to CALI, which provides lessons for law school courses and tutorialsand podcasts to help students prepare for final exams. You will need to register foraccess, and the registration codes are available at the circulation desk.Advent with STMSIn the midst of finals, STMS invites you to join in a spiritual journey through Adventtowards Christmas. Each day a different inspirational verse and simple action item will beposted outside the St. Thomas More Chapel. Saint of the Week: St. Juan Diego with Brett CavanaughAfter teaching in Catholic schools near the Texas/Mexico border and developing adevotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, my wife and I visited Mexico City in March. SaintJuan Diego was an indigenous peasant born in present-day Mexico City in 1474. Heconverted to Catholicism in 1524, shortly after the Spanish conquest. Our Lady appearedto Juan on December 9, 1531 on Tepeyac Hill. Notably, she appeared as an indigenouswoman, speaking his native language and requesting that the local bishop build her ashrine. Though Juan shared the Blessed Mother’s message, the bishop requestedevidence of the apparition.On December 12th, Our Lady appeared again and told Juan to fill his cloak, or tilma, withthe flowers miraculously growing in the winter on Tepeyac Hill. Juan collected roses,returned to the bishop, and opened his tilma to reveal an image of Our Lady imprintedthere. With this evidence, the bishop built a shrine on Tepeyac Hill that has become apopular pilgrimage site. Today, Guadalupe is venerated throughout Mexico as a symbol ofGod’s care for the Americas during a particularly turbulent time and a reminder that in allplaces, at all times, God speaks to us in ways that we will understand.Juan’s tilma remains on display behind the altar in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe,and beautiful flowers continue to grow at Tepeyac, nearly 500 years after Our Ladyappeared to Juan. In March, my wife and I climbed Tepeyac Hill and attended mass in theBasilica. Despite being in the largest city in North America, and surrounded by thousandsof other pilgrims, we felt a sense of profound peace.St. Juan Diego, the first indigenoussaint of the Americas and Our Lady’sfaithful messenger, pray for us!
