All toys and gifts will be gifted to children andyouth currently living in foster care in our county. The drive will take place betweenNovember 27th and December 1st! If you would like to participate, we ask that you donate NEW and UNWRAPPED toys andgifts. The collection area will be in the atrium, next to the Christmas tree! Gifts will begoing to children of all ages so any toy or item that is appropriate for children from infancyto teenagers is welcomed! Gifts that cannot be accepted: DVDs, religiously affiliated gifts, and toys that depictor resemble weapons of any kind. Saint of the Week: St. Catherine Labouré with EllieAugustineOver the summer, I went on pilgrimage to France and visited the shrine of St. CatherineLabouré. Though not as well known as other St. Catherines, I grew up well acquaintedwith her.Catherine Labouré was born in France in 1806. Moved by her love for the sick, sheentered the Daughters of Charity in 1830. One night, Catherine awoke to the voice of achild calling her name. The child brought her to the convent chapel, where the Virgin Marywas waiting. Our Lady urged Catherine to forge a medal displaying Our Lady as sheappeared before her – in an oval frame, standing upon a globe, rays of light coming out ofher hands, twelve stars surrounding her, and the words, "O Mary, conceived without sin,pray for us who have recourse to thee,” surrounding her. Though met at first with disbelief,Catherine succeeded in her mission of forging the medal. Today we know it as “theMiraculous Medal.”Fast forward 170 years. My mother was pregnant.Prenatal testing revealed that the baby had DownSyndrome and a number of heart problems. Mymother turned immediately to Our Lady of theMiraculous Medal, praying for her baby’s health.Though due on December 12, I was born onNovember 28, the feast of St. Catherine Labouré,with no health complications. My mother’s prayerswere answered. Growing up, I was frequently toldthe miraculous story of my mother’s pregnancy.St. Catherine is one of the incorruptible saints, whichmeans that her body is preserved just as it waswhen she died 150 years ago. This summer, I wasable to visit her convent in Paris, and see the saintwho, along with Our Blessed Mother, intervened inmy life so personally.
