Prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiases among primary school children in a community living in Porto Alegre metropolitan area

Abstract

Realizou-se um estudo para determinar a prevalência de geohelmintos em escolares residentes nas vilas periféricas de Porto Alegre, RS. Um total de 16.460 espécimes fecais foram obtidos desta população durante o período de 1965 a 1981, e as técnicas usadas para o exame parasitológico das fezes foram a de Hoffman, Pons & Janer e a de Baermann. Esta pesquisa mostrou que 11.341 (68,90%) alunos estavam infectados por uma ou mais espécies de parasitos intestinais. Os geohelmintos com maior freqüência foram o Trichuris trichiura, (43,09%), o Ascaris lumbricoides (29,01%), os Ancylostomatidae (6,31%) e o Strongyloides stercoralis (3,01%).A survey of geohelminths were carried out in primary school children and middle school students inhabitants the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, RS. A total of 16.460 stool specimens were obtained between 1965-1981 from this population. The stool specimens were examined on the day of collection using Hoffman, Pons & Jones and Baermann techniques. One or more geohelminths were demonstrated in 68.90% of the students population. The most common geohelminths were Trichuris trichiura (43.90%), Ascaris lumbricoides (29.01%), hoohvorms (6.31%) e Strongyloides stercoralis (3.01%)
