El artículo aborda la compleja interrelación entre el proceso de construcción del Estado chileno y el fortalecimiento de lo que podría llamarse “sociedad civil” a través de la proliferación de asociaciones civiles de diversa índole. El período que abarca va desde 1857, cuando entra en vigencia el Código Civil que comienza a regular la constitución de este tipo de organizaciones, hasta 1899. Son aproximadamente cuatro décadas que nos permiten analizar el auge de la constitución de asociaciones civiles cuyo objetivo era cumplir con diferentes fines. Argumentamos que este proceso está interrelacionado y mutuamente influenciado por la expansión del Estado y ambos se cruzan a través de la configuración de un nuevo concepto de ciudadanía, fomentado por las prácticas internas de estas asociaciones.The article addresses the complex interrelationship between the process of construction of the Chilean and the strengthening of what could be called “civil society” through the proliferation of civil associations of various kinds. It covers the period from 1857, when the Civil Code came into force and started to regulate the establishment of this kind of organization, until 1899. These are approximately four decades that allow us to analyze the boom of the establishment of civil associations whose aim was to fulfill different purposes. We argue that this process is interrelated and mutually influenced by the state’s expansion and both intersect through the configuration of a new concept of citizenship, fostered by the internal practices of these associations
