Three weeks before he was jailed for leading peaceful protesters in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. King addressed the Ford Hall Forum in March 1963. His address, The Future of Desegregation, coincided with the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation. Dr. King called for renewed Federal efforts at desegregation, while noting that the law cannot change the heart, but it can restrain the heartless.
