Prince of Tyre, lravels to Antioch to win the hand of the beautiful princess. King Antiochus has kept suitors from marrying her by requiring that they answer a riddle correctly or die. Pericles correctly guesses that the daughter of Antiochus is Involved In an Incestuous affair with her father. Antiochus is aware that Pericles has uncovered the affair, and Pericles knows it. His life in peril. Pericles flees Antioch for Tyre, followed by Antiochus' assassin. Fearing Antlochus will attack Tyre, Pericles appoints his counselor, Helicanus, to rule as regent and sails for Tarsus, bnnging food to the famine-stricken country ruled by Cleon and Dionyza. He then continues on to Pentapolis, but on the way, the ship is wrecked, and Pericles is the sole survivor. At Pentapolis, Pericles participates in a tournament for the hand of Thaisa, daughter of King Simonides. He wins the tournament, the two fal l In love, and Pericles marries Thaisa. In the meantime, news arrives that Antiochus is dead and that the people of Tyre want lheir prince back. Pericles makes arrangements to sail for "fyre with Thaisa, who Is now pregnant with their child. A storm along the way brings abOut U'le birth of Marina, their daughter: Thaisa, tragically, is believed to die m ch1ldb1rth. Sealing her in a watertight coffin, Pericles gives her a burial at sea. The coffin washes up on the shores of Ephesus, where Cerirnon manages to revive Thaisa. Unsurprisingly, Thaisa assumes that Pericles Is lost at sea and promptly becomes a votaress in the Temple of Diana. On the way back to Tyre, Pericles leaves the infant Marina at Tarsus for Cleon and his wife Dionyza to raise, then sails on for Tyre. Sixteen years later, a beautiful Manna has inspired the jealousy of Dlonyza - who feels Marina outshines her own daughter - and Dionyza resolves to have Marina murdered. Dlonyza·s servant, who is entrusted with the job, is about to carry out the deed when Manna Is captured by pirates. The servant reports back that Marina is dead. and Cleon mournfully raises a monument to her memory. Pericles encounters ll1e tomb on a visit to Tarsus and fa lls into a deep despair. The pirates, meanwhile, sell Marina 1111to a brothel in Mytilene, but she is soon freed by the governor. Pericles sails into Mytilene, still deeply depressed about the loss of his child. While there, he encounters ~arlna, and after some talking, Pericles eventually recognizes her for his daughter: the two are happily reunited. Lysimachus, the governor. asks for Marina's hand, which Marina accepts. Then. Pericles ls visited ln a dream by the goddess Diana, who instructs him to visit her temple at Ephesus.
