ThayerNC State University, Mountain Horticultural Crops Research & Extension Center, Fletcher, NCAbstract: An apple pest management program that relied heavilyon reduced-riskpesticides andmating disruption was evaluated on approximately 800acres in NorthCarolinaover a three-yearperiod from 2000 to 2002. Before initiation of the project, tufted apple bud moth, codling mothand Oriental fruit moth were the primary insect pests of apples in this region. The use of insectgrowth regulators and mating disruption provided excellent control of lepidopterous pests, butinsects that were sporadic or of minor importance under organophosphate-based systemsincreased in importance, including SanJosescale, Comstock mealybug, plumcurculio, andapplemaggot. The recent registrations of new insecticides (Esteem, Actara andAvaunt) have helped tosolve these initial problems. However, the cost of alternative pest management programs washigher than conventional organophosphate-based programs.ImplementationAreawide II implementation project in apple, Year 2 resultsJay F. Brunner, Ted Alway, Betsy Beers, John Dunley and Vince JonesWashington State University, Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center, Wenatchee, WAAbstract: The Areawide II project completed its second year. Fifteen locations comparedconventional and non-OP programs that supplemented codling moth mating disruption. Therewere lower levels of damageby all pests in 2002 compared to 2001 in both programs. Results oftrapping and cost of programs will be discussed.
