Villanova has always been a part of my life. I’m very lucky, and proud, to beone of over sixty family members to have graduated from the University. For anyone whoknows me, it’s no shocker that I chose St. Thomas of Villanova to be my confirmationsaint.Tomas Garcia Martinez was born in the 1480s, and he was raised in Villanueva de LosInfantes, Spain. From the beginning, everyone knew of Tomas’s brilliance. In his earlytwenties, Tomas became one of the youngest professors at the University of Alcala, wherehe taught art, theology, logic, and philosophy. His reputation as a professor spread, and,in 1516, the chancellor of the renowned University of Salamanca offered him aprofessorship. Tomas declined the offer and instead entered the Augustinian monastery.Tomas surrendered all that he was to God.Tomas was a skilled writer and eloquent orator. Legend has it that Charles V, after hearingone of his sermons, observed: “This monsignor can move even the stones.” Tomas had aprofound sense of how to govern, and so, he held many positions of leadership in theChurch. He was a local prior, a regional superior, and eventually the Archbishop ofValencia. Tomas always cared for his people, and he believed deeply in the structuralreform of society. At a time when many in the Church used wealth for unholy means, heused his power and influence to establish schools, hospitals, kitchens, homeless shelters,and sanitary prisons. Tomas died in 1555, and he was canonized as St. Thomas ofVillanova in 1658. His feast day is celebrated on September 22.Words cannot capture the eternal gratitude I have for St. Thomas of Villanova. As NotreDame lawyers, we can learn a thing or two from him. A different kind of lawyer recognizesthat the law is a vocation, not a profession.
