EDITORIAL Open AccessNote from the editor, January 2021J.-Matthias Graf von der Schulenburg1*, Sebastian Braun2 and Jan Zeidler3The editorial board and the editors of the open-accessjournal Health Economics Review (HER) wish all thereaders a happy, healthy and blessed 2021. The turn ofthe year is a date to look back and develop plans for thefuture. Let me start with the biggest change in 2021.Due to the brilliant development of the HER, we haveextended the number of editors. Sebastian Braun willnow share with J.-Matthias Graf von der Schulenburgthe position of Editor-in-Chief of the HER. In addition,Jan Zeidler will take over Sebastian’s position as Man-aging Editor. Jan Zeidler is the Managing Director of theCenter for Health Economics Research Hannover(CHERH), one of the four large health economic re-search centers founded by the federal government ofGermany. In addition, he is one of the leading experts inclaims data analyses in Germany with a broad experi-ence in health services research.The HER was founded almost 10 years ago. Since thenthe development of this journal has been excellent. Ouraim for the journal was to become the leading refereedopen access journal in health economics, but also to de-velop a special focus in certain areas. We are on a goodtrack.The number of submissions to the journal has in-creased to over two-hundred per year. However, wedid not decrease the quality standards and require-ments: the average number of articles published peryear are between 30 and 40. We plan a slight increaseof the number of published articles in the years tocome.As you know, HER is open for a broad range of theor-etical contributions, empirical studies and analyses ofhealth policy with a health economic focus. Its scope in-cludes macro- and micro economics of health care fi-nancing, health insurance and reimbursement as well ashealth economic evaluation, health services research,pharmacoeconomics and health policy analysis. Furtherresearch topics will be health care management and thegrowing importance of health care in developingcountries.Although the HER publishes on all topics in healtheconomics, the journal is strong in a couple oftopics. Many articles present research on health careissues in developing countries. The editors are veryproud of the fact that the HER is strongest on devel-oping countries in Asia and Africa among healtheconomic journals. The editorial board plans to fur-ther strengthen the journal’s reputation on this topic.A second focus is on inequality and justice ques-tions. However, the HER also contains articles ana-lyzing cost-effectiveness and quality of life effects ofmedical interventions. We will also stimulate submis-sions on the economics of the treatment of rare dis-eases. Public authorities in the EU and NorthAmerica have encouraged research on rare diseasesand have improved the conditions to market innova-tive therapeutic concepts for rare diseases. Newtechnologies such as the genome analysis and genereplacement therapies have improved the treatmentsof many orphan diseases and cancer. We would liketo see more papers on the economic aspects of theseissues as well as on the economics of prevention andvaccination programs.From its start, HER-articles were listed in the mostrelevant databases. Our journal is listed in the Social Sci-ences Citation Index® and has an Impact Factor of 1.451and a CiteScore of 2.9 (2019). HER articles have on theaverage 175.000 downloads per year, with up to 250.000down loads.We like to thank our colleagues in the editorial board,the authors and referees who have contributed to theHER for their support. In particular, our referees did agreat job in the past.
