THE CHESTNUT CHOPPER SUMMER 1969 LAMBDA LAMBDA OF LAMBDA CHI ALPHA WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY CHI OMEGA'S NOVEMBER NONSENSE Lambda Chi set the stage for a great year with the first place award in the Chi Omel!a's November Nonsen-se. The theme dealt with the critic-ism of American institutions and our entry was entitled "A Dying Busi-ness", a spoof on the American fun-eral. As in the best of Chopper tra-dition, song, dance and a bit of bur-lesque brought the trophy home. Al-though several greek acts aroused crit~cism among groups, "A Dying Business" was congratulated as a "Professional Performance" by the COLLEGE HEIGHTS HERALD. NEW OFFICERS: HIGH ALPHA. HIGH BETA HIGH GAMMA HIGH KAPPA. HIGH TUA .. HIGH DELTA. HIGH SIGMA HIGH PHI .. HIGH PI ... KAPPA DELTA WASHBOARD JAMBOREE The washboard Jamboree proved to be one of the most challenging acts ever attempted by the Chopper crew. Numerous scripts and ideas were attempted in the rehearsals but none of them proved appropri-ate for the show. However, after drafting several of our " regional" Brothers, once again the first place trophy was snatched, amid the cheer of an audience expecting the best. Western. Al-though we had iniatially refrained from attempting a "win", Brother Payne railed the chapter to bring home the third prize of the Greek Triple Crown. Songs included, "More to be Pitied Than Censored", "Friv-ilous Sal", "We had Rythem", "Evil Campanions", and others. We had locked up Spring Sing for the fourth year in a row to an already spoiled audience. A DREAM .... While riding on a jet flying west, I fell asleep for to take my rest. I dreamed a dream that made me sad Concerning myself and the first few friends that I had. We sat around in the Parlor room Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon. Where we together weathered many a storm, Laughing and singing till the early hours of the mom. By the old fireplace where our heart.a were wanned, Our words were told and our 11cmgs were sung. We longed for nothing and were satisfied Talking and joking about the world outside. With light hearts through the heat and cold We never thought we would get very old. We thought we could sit for ever in fun, Though our chances really a million to one. As easy it was to tell black from white, It was all that easy to tell wrong from right. Our choices were few and the thought never hit, But the one road we traveled would be shattered and split. Many a year has come and gone Many a gamble has been lost and won And many a road taken by many a first friend And each one of them I'll never see again. I wish, I wish, I wish in vain That we could sit simply in that room once again Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat, I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that. What was pledging like back then? How did our t raditions begin? Our chapter history is lacking in these excerpts of every day like in the halls of Lambda Chi. While we can remember some of the past through trophies and pictures, they tell us little of the human relationships which existed in the story of Lambda Lambda Zeta. What happened in the Lambda Lodge, Cherry Cottage, Kentucky Street, and Knox Manor? What do you remember about your years as an undergraduate of Lambda Chi Alphs? We of the Chestnut Chopper would like to start a column devoted to the history of life in the chapter . If you have any anecdotes or facts, humorous or otherwise, please send them to us. We are sur~ t~at all the alu~ni will enj~y reading them. If response is favorable, we will begin a Lambda Chi history column m the next issue of the Chopper. Please send all correspondence, including your Zeat number and graduation date, to: FROM THE HIGH KAPPA AND THE NEW PLEDGE PROGRAM . . . . . . Lambda Lambda's pledge program, since I have been active, has been basically the same; but necessity and desire have forced us to make some changes each year. I , too, have some changes for the Fall of 1969. In order for the pledges to better understand the fraternity, they must make a trip to the National headquarters before their initiation. We shall still have house duties, pledge pro-jects, parties, mixers, etc. The Brothers have expressed the desire to see the pledges more often, so the pledges will be required to be at the house every day from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. An 1.F.C. ruling on grades, as well as my own beliefs, necessitate some sort of study schedule. These will start every night at 9:00 after which time pledges will not be allowed to get signatures or be in the house. The pledges will have weekly meetings with myself and the pledge committee at which various officers of the fraternity will speak. My purpose throughout pledgeship will be to educate the pledge to be a good brother, not just a good pledge. HOMECOMING 1968 Homecoming 1968 proved to be one of the most elaborate and successful events of the entire year. An earnest attempt was made to correct the failure in Alumni communication. The Annual Party was held at the Bowling Green National Guard Armory with the presenta-tion of the "gavel" to past president Dan Reynolds. Saturday morning a highly successful breakfast was given at the Holiday Inn in the Kentucky Room. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. J . A. Marcum, Mrs. Carroll Pearson and daughter and Mrs. T. H. Baird. Yours in ZAX, Andy Shuping The presentation of a portrait of our Brother Carroll "Pete" Pearson reminded each Brother of the true and inner meaning of Brotherhood and the "life-long" ideals inspired by Lambda Chi Alpha. After the game, a buffet style dinn.:?r was served at the house, along with a generous serving of old stories and tales. In the words of our Alumni, "It was truly the best homecoming ever.
