A STUDY ON THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ CONFLICT IN \ud “KALEIDOSCOPE” NOVEL BY DANIELLE STEEL

Abstract

Literature is a life expression of human beings in the form of experience, thoughts, idea, \ud and feeling in concrete description by using a language as the medium. It enriches the \ud reader’s knowledge and experience about life. That is why the writer analyzes literature, \ud especially novel that focused on conflict as the topic of this study. Conflict is one of the \ud elements of novel, which can help the readers know what the author wants to tell. Through \ud this study, the writer wants to know what types of conflict and the most dominant conflict \ud faced by the main characters in “Kaleidoscope” novel. \ud This study takes Danielle Steel’s novel, “Kaleidoscope” which is a popular one. The purpose \ud of this study is to analyze and to know the types of conflict and the most dominant type of \ud conflict faced by the main characters in this novel. The steps of collecting data of this study \ud are reading and comprehending the novel, identifying the conflict, identifying the types of \ud conflict, coding the novel pages that have a certain type of conflict, and counting the most \ud dominant conflict faced by the main characters. \ud This study used descriptive research method because the writer just wants to find the types \ud of conflict faced by the main characters and there is no treatment as in experimental \ud research. This study used objective approach because the writer just analyzes the novel \ud itself, not the other aspects of novel, such as the background of the author. The population \ud is the whole events that exist in “Kaleidoscope” novel. The sample is some paragraphs and \ud dialogues that have a certain types of conflict. \ud The result of this study shows that “Kaleidoscope” novel covers three types of conflict. They \ud are social, psychological, and physical conflicts. From the three types of conflicts, there is \ud one that most dominant faced by the main characters in the novel that is social conflict
