Here we present a brief updateon the current situation.We conducted a new digital survey among 329young cardiologists (response rate 81%, n=266) whocompleted their training between 2016 and 2021. Theunemployment rate remains low (0.4%), yet tempo-rary positions remain frequent. Three years afterregistration, 34% had not gained a permanent po-sition. However, comparing the two cohorts [1],the temporary position rate decreased slightly: from41 to 34%. Furthermore, a smaller group (68%) ofyoung cardiologists described the current job marketas problematic, compared to 77% in the previouscohort.These new insights highlight the fact that tempo-rary positions remain common practice in the Dutchlabour market. This might cause a heavy burden onyoung cardiologists, due to financial and geographicalinsecurity often during an important and busy phasein their personal lives. These temporary positions areaccompanied by less autonomy and decreased con-trol over the work environment that may consequentlylead to a decline in job satisfaction and increased riskof burnout. Also, continuity of patient care is impaireddue to alternating young cardiologists in temporarypositions. This brief update demonstrates a grad-ual decline in temporary positions, but they remaina long-term issue for many. This is reflected by thepersistently high number of young cardiologists thatconsider the current job market problematic (68%).As mentioned by Vorselaars et al., the high numberof temporary positions is not limited to cardiologyand has been observed in many medical specialtiesin the Netherlands [1]. This phenomenon might re-flect the uncertain financial situation of many Dutchhospitals due to the limitation of financial growth forhospital care, as permitted by the Dutch government(Het Hoofdlijnenakkoord). This might cause a heavy burden onyoung cardiologists, due to financial and geographicalinsecurity often during an important and busy phasein their personal lives. These temporary positions areaccompanied by less autonomy and decreased con-trol over the work environment that may consequentlylead to a decline in job satisfaction and increased riskof burnout. Also, continuity of patient care is impaireddue to alternating young cardiologists in temporarypositions. This brief update demonstrates a grad-ual decline in temporary positions, but they remaina long-term issue for many. This is reflected by thepersistently high number of young cardiologists thatconsider the current job market problematic (68%).As mentioned by Vorselaars et al., the high numberof temporary positions is not limited to cardiologyand has been observed in many medical specialtiesin the Netherlands [1]. Here we present a brief updateon the current situation.We conducted a new digital survey among 329young cardiologists (response rate 81%, n=266) whocompleted their training between 2016 and 2021. Theunemployment rate remains low (0.4%), yet tempo-rary positions remain frequent. Three years afterregistration, 34% had not gained a permanent po-sition. However, comparing the two cohorts [1],the temporary position rate decreased slightly: from41 to 34%. Furthermore, a smaller group (68%) ofyoung cardiologists described the current job marketas problematic, compared to 77% in the previouscohort.These new insights highlight the fact that tempo-rary positions remain common practice in the Dutchlabour market. This might cause a heavy burden onyoung cardiologists, due to financial and geographicalinsecurity often during an important and busy phasein their personal lives. These temporary positions areaccompanied by less autonomy and decreased con-trol over the work environment that may consequentlylead to a decline in job satisfaction and increased riskof burnout. Also, continuity of patient care is impaireddue to alternating young cardiologists in temporarypositions. This brief update demonstrates a grad-ual decline in temporary positions, but they remaina long-term issue for many. This is reflected by thepersistently high number of young cardiologists thatconsider the current job market problematic (68%).As mentioned by Vorselaars et al., the high numberof temporary positions is not limited to cardiologyand has been observed in many medical specialtiesin the Netherlands [1]. This phenomenon might re-flect the uncertain financial situation of many Dutchhospitals due to the limitation of financial growth forhospital care, as permitted by the Dutch government(Het Hoofdlijnenakkoord). We hope the currenttrend towards more permanent positions continues,since it is important for job satisfaction and motiva-tion among young cardiologists.
