Con-sequently, these projects and programs do notbenefit as much as they could from best practicesand protocols developed through other long-termengagements. As the global burden of cancerincreases, cancer researchers and program man-agers are likely to benefit from a more completeunderstanding of ongoing work in cancer control.The limited availability of tools for collaboration andsharing of best practices have resulted in a call toaction for the scientific community to partner onthe development of a platform that provides knowl-edge of existing resources and expertise.Global Oncology (GO), a nonprofit organization,and the Center for Global Health (CGH) at theNational Cancer Institute (NCI) have developed aWeb-based tool that facilitates planning of re-search, training opportunities, and community-based programs in cancer control. This tool,called the Global Cancer Project Map (GCPM;http://gcpm.globalonc.org), is an interactive Website that enables viewers to locate cancer projectsand research programs as displayed on a worldmap (Figure 1). GCPM currently displays morethan 800 projects of more than 620 investigatorsworking at more than 160 institutions in 88countries (Table 1) . The inaugural version of theGCPM was officially launched on March 25,2015, at the Symposium on Global CancerResearch, sponsored by NCI, the Consortium ofUniversities for Global Health (CUGH), and theDana-Farber Cancer Institute.The data initially used to populate the GCPMconsisted of projects supported by NCI extramuralinternational awards, including direct grants toforeign institutions. Data collection and uploadhave also begun on the international endeav-ors of NCI-designated cancer centers andother international partners, such as the Amer-ican Society of Clinical Oncology and theUnion for International Cancer Control. Thisresource establishes a broad base of globalcancer-related projects that will continuallyexpand as data are added to the site.At present, users can access the Web site fromanywhere in the world at no cost. Designed to bestreamlined and user-friendly, the site is optimized fordatabase performance, search speed, and the abilityto visualize projects and potential collaborators.Projects can be searched by keyword, cancer type,project type (eg, basic research, training, cancerscreening), and country. Additional descriptive statis-tics such as the Human Development Index orcancer incidence and prevalence figures can easilybe overlaid on themap to identify disparities betweenrelative research investment and cancer epidemiol-ogy. GCPM offers the potential to be used as aresource for current cancer-related project informa-tion, uniting and educating stakeholders at all levels intheir cancer control efforts.It is projected that the linkages facilitated by GCPMwill catalyze a process of addressing cancer control inparts of the world where we see overwhelming ineq-uities and disparities while minimizing duplication ofefforts, which will lead to more efficient use of re-sources. Global oncology literature comprises only asmall portion of published work and often faces alengthy process to enter the public domain. GCPMmakes information about these ongoing projectsfreely available to allow cancer researchers and pro-gram managers access to a platform where informa-tion on global cancer work can be exchanged andideas can be developed.
