We acknowledgewe made a somewhat hasty inference from hislier work and that this may not apply. This canunderstood (and hopefully excused) coming fromgeophysicist and a geochemist having used datatributed by a specialist in Palaeontology... We aconcur with Dr Buffetaut that better knowledgemass extinction patterns is now required to furtour understanding of mass extinctions and otherjor biotic crises. Indeed, we think that the most iportant clues may now come from very detailed arigorous palaeontological work. However, this coment in no way alters our main conclusions abthe one-time coincidence of an impact and extition at the K/T boundary, and the several casescorrespondence of flood-basalt volcanism and exttion. Thus we urge caution regarding staments such as: “If a meteorite impact was involvat the T/J boundary, its effects on terrestrial vebrates were quite different from those of the Chicxuimpact at the K/T boundary...”, which seems to psuppose impact as the extinction mechanism, whewe argue that it is currently impossible to estimquantitatively the significance of the Chicxulub impact as a factor in the K/T extinctions.
