Le nuage de Coop Himmelblau en 1968: Emergence du nuage comme problématique architecturale contemporaine

Abstract

Structured in three parts - "Precipitation", "Condensation" then "Evaporation" - the thesis puts into historical perspective the emergence of the cloud in the architectural field as a specific contemporary problem.Coop Himmelblau’s Wolke (Cloud) project started in Vienna in 1968 is recognized as inaugural. Before him, architectural projects summoned the cloud but not in all the theoretical richness of its dimensions. Or, the problem is partially worked without stating the unifying concept of cloud. The thesis shows how the cloud worries the architectural discipline and its doctrinal foundations in a complete reversal of values. The model is no longer the solar fixity of an ideal cosmology but the fuzzy scalability of an accepted reality. The experience of man and his fluctuations become primary values of the project. Finally, it addresses the actuality of the cloud with other architectural interpretations.The volume of appendices lists the chronological iconography of the cloud in architecture.Structurée en trois parties - "Précipitation", "Condensation" puis "Evaporation" – la thèse met en perspective historique l'émergence du nuage dans le champ architectural comme problématique contemporaine spécifique.Le projet Wolke (Nuage) de Coop Himmelblau commencé à Vienne en 1968 est reconnu comme inaugural. Avant lui, des projets d'architecture convoquent le nuage mais pas dans toute la richesse théorique de ses dimensions. Ou alors, la problématique est travaillée partiellement sans énoncer le concept fédérateur de nuage. La thèse montre comment le nuage inquiète la discipline architecturale et ses fondements doctrinaux en un complet renversement de valeurs. Le modèle n'est plus la fixité solaire d'une cosmologie idéale mais l'évolutivité floue d'un réel accepté. Le vécu de l'homme et ses fluctuances deviennent des valeurs primordiales du projet.
