διαχείριση των προβλημάτων που εμφανίζουν τα άτομα που υπέστησαν βία.INTRODUCTION: Violence is a public health problem that affects all aspects of
life and age groups. The phenomenon of violence appears medical, economic and
sociological implications. The rise of violence has resulted in an increase of
cases with injuries caused by violence which are presented at the Emergency
Department (ED).
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to record and categorize the kind of
injuries which came from violence and presented to ED in a central hospital of
Athens. To investigate possible correlations between injuries and demographics,
causes of injury and outcome of the cases.
MATERIAL - METHOD: The research study was perspective and lasted from September
2011 to December 2011, for four months. The sample of the study included 124
incidents with injuries from violence and included people aged 16 and over.
Data was collected when the hospital was on call through a structured
questionnaire. A Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) n.19.0 was used
for the data analysis.
RESULTS: A 72.6% were male and a 27.4% were women out of 124 cases of the
study. The highest percentage of attacks (51.6%) occurred near the victims
residence and the main cause of attack was robbery (27.4%). The victims did
not know their offender in a high percentage (75%) and the most common mode of
injury was beating (71.0%). This study indicated statistically significant
correlations between the cause of injury and demographic characteristics, and
between friends and source of injury (p <0,001). The correlation between
citizenship and source of injury was also statistically significant (p =
0,003). The correlation between drinking alcohol, drug use and the presence of
psychiatric illness and cause injury was found statistically significant (p =
0.004. Marginally statistically significant correlations were found between
the outcome and mode of injury (p = 0.07) and between using or not sharp
instrument.
CONCLUSIONS: The outbreak of violence becomes increased in our country and
globally, in general. Future research, therefore, could focus on the
psychological injuries and their consequences for victims of violence.
The role of health professionals (nurses, doctors, social workers, etc.) is
crucial in the treatment and rehabilitation of the victims of violence who
arrive at the hospital emergency. They also should be able to identify the
causes of the challenge and to steer properly.
