Late Roman Pottery from Viminacium - Thermae : The excavation of 2004

Abstract

Previous excavations in Viminacium took place inthe area of the necropolis and were mostly protective in theircharacter. Excavations of the thermae at Thermae, that werelocated some 200 m west of the castrum , were also carriedout on several occasions. At first, in the 1970s, a conha wasdiscovered, which helped to identify the building. On this oc-casion, parts of wall frescos were detected among the rubble, which indicated a luxurious furnishing of the building. Duringthe excavation, several phases of utilization were detected, from the late 2nd to the late 4 th century. These phases wereseparated by layers of burned remains, which were also vis-ible in the profile outside the wall of the conha. Excavationsat Thermae were continued after 30 years in 2004. We couldnot explore the building in all detail, but most of it couldbe uncovered: five conhas as well as several rooms
