Thefirst one considers the laterally insulated solids and uses finite integral transforms. Thecorresponding analytical solutions are exact but need a long computational time to treatan important number of contacts. The second one considers the same solids and uses thelinear superposition method after applying an infinite integral transform. Les modèlesdéveloppés dans la littérature sont généralement basés sur des micro-géométries idéalisées (aspérites iden-tiques et distribuées de façon régulière). Dans la pratique les contacts ont des dimensions différentes etsont distribués de façon aléatoire. Dans cet article des modèles analytiques sont développés pour tenircompte de ces aspects du problème. Les contacts sont modélisés par des sources de chaleur multiples deforme circulaire de rayons différents et disposés de façon aléatoire sur l’aire de contact. Les premiers mo-dèles considèrent des solides semi-infinis, de géométrie de contact carrée ou circulaire, latéralement isolés(Fig. 1). Dans le cas de la surface carrée, la solution est obtenue par l’utilisation de la transformée de Fou-rier cosinus finie et son inverse. Pour la géométrie circulaire, on utilise la transformée de Hankel finie et soninverse. La température moyenne T(i)c de l’aire d’un contact (i) est donnée par l’équation (1) pour la géo-métrie carrée et l’équation (2) pour la géométrie circulaire. En écrivant, pour chaque configuration, l’égalitédes T(i)c , on aboutit à un système matriciel linéaire qui permet de calculer la densité de flux qi entrant parchacun des contacts et les résistances thermiques de constriction individuelles R(i)cs . On déduit ensuite larésistance thermique de constriction Rcs par l’association en parallèle des R(i)cs . Ces solutions sont exactes,mais, compte tenu de la présence de doubles séries dont la convergence est lente, les temps de calculs sontrelativement longs lorsque l’on considère un nombre important de contacts. Les autres modèles s’appli-quent aux mêmes configurations géométriques de contact, mais utilisent le principe de superposition. Ondétermine d’abord les températures pour une source circulaire sur une surface infinie et on superpose la so-lution aux autres contacts. La T(i)c est donnée par l’équation (4). Dans cette expression les développementsont été stoppés au terme (ai/bij )5, où ai est le rayon d’un contact (i) et bij la distance entre les centres descontacts (i) et (j). Pour obtenir la R(i)cs d’un contact (i) on soustrait à la température T(i)c la températureTc,i due à la macro-constriction (Fig. 2). Cette température est estimée par la résolution du problème d’unesource de chaleur unique ayant pour valeur la moyenne des densités de flux de l’ensemble des sources qiet dont les dimensions sont L × L pour la géométrie carrée et le rayon b pour la géométrie circulaire. Ils’agit là d’une hypothèse car la distribution des contacts étant aléatoires, la densité de flux ne possède pas,rigoureusment, une distribution uniforme sur l’aire apparente. Nous avons vérifié cette hypothèse en com-parant les résultats à ceux du modèle précédent (lequel est exact) et avons noté des différences très faibles(de l’ordre du pourcent). De la même manière que précédemment, on écrit l’égalité des températures duesà la micro-constriction, ici T(i)c − Tc,i , et on déduit d’abord les qi , par la résolution d’un système matriciellinéaire, puis les R(i)cs . La Rcs est également calculée par l’association en parallèle des R(i)cs . Ce modèle estapproché mais relativement précis. Il nécessite des temps de calculs nettement plus courts que le précédent,ce qui permet de traiter un nombre de contacts plus important (de l’ordre de quelques centaines).1. IntroductionThermal contact resistance has been widely studied in these last decades [1–4]. The models developedin the literature are generally based on idealized contacts (identical asperities, regularly distributed overthe contact plane). In practice, the sizes of real contact areas are different and the contacts are randomlydistributed. An experimental study [1], using the electrical analogy, has been realized to examine the effectof eccentricity of one contact on the thermal constriction resistance Rcs evolution. An analytical solutionadapted to this experiment [5] has been developed. The results are in good agreement and have shown thatRcs increases with the increase in eccentricity, and this effect is all the more important as the relative contactsize ε value is high (ε = √Ar/Aa , Ar and Aa are the real and apparent contact areas, respectively). Thisanalytical solution has been generalized to multiple contacts with different sizes and randomly distributedover the contact plane [6]. Mecanique 330 (2002) 39–43greater than those of identical and regular contacts. A recent study [7] confirms this tendency for identicaldisks randomly distributed. In this paper some analytical solutions are proposed to calculate Rcs for semi-infinite solids. The micro-contacts are modeled by numerous uniform circular heat sources with differentradii and random positions. The developed models allow to calculate Rcs for Hertzian or large surfacecontact. The first developed model considers laterally insulated semi-infinite solids and uses finite integraltransforms. The corresponding analytical solutions are exact but need a long computational time to treat animportant number of contacts. The second one considers the same solids and uses the linear superpositionmethod after having applied an infinite integral transform. The analytical solutions are approximate butaccurate and need little computational time.2. Model for a laterally insulated semi-infinite square prismWe consider a laterally insulated semi-infinite square prism (Fig. 1a), with the side L, the thermalconductivity k and zero reference temperature. The surface z = 0 is subjected to numerous heat sourcesN circular shape (radius ai and space coordinates xi , yi ) and generating a uniform flux qi . The rest of thissurface is insulated. The thermalconstriction resistance R(i)cs of disk contact (i) is defined by R(i)cs = (T (i)c − T s)/qiπa2i , where T s is theaverage temperature of the apparent contact area. In this problem, T s is equal to zero. The expression ofRcs is deduced in connecting all R(i)cs in parallel as Rcs =[∑Ni=1(1/R(i)cs )]−1. The qi values are calculatedby putting (T(i)c − T s)=Tc = Cste, for all contacts. This involves the solving of a linear matrix system.3. Model for a laterally insulated semi-infinite cylinderThe same problem is studied here except that the geometry of solid is cylindrical (Fig. 1b). Approached models for a square or circular region of contactWe consider a semi-infinite medium (Fig. 2) with an infinite surface where the disk contacts are locatedin a square (a) or a circular (b) region. The heat transfer due to all sources is three-dimensional. The heatconduction equation being linear, we first determine the response for a unique source (two-dimensionalaxisymetric problem, T (r, z)) and then we use the superposition method to take account of other contacts.The steady-state surface temperature Tj (r,0) due to the unique source (j) can be calculated using theinfinite Hankel transform and its inverse. Thistemperature can be estimated considering the same contact region L×L subjected to the average heat fluxqav = ∑Ni=1(qiπa2i )/Aa . In a practical point of view, taking into account the contact disorder, the macro-constriction is not veritably due to an uniform heat flux. We have analyzed this assumption comparing theresults of the present model to those of the first one (laterally insulated solids). The difference between thetwo models is small (about the per cent). The expression of Tc,i due to a square heat source is classical [9].In the case of circular apparent contact area which b radius, the temperature Tc,i can be calculated usingthe infinite Hankel transform and its inverse. We obtain:Tc,i = T (r = ei ,0)= qavbkF(12,−12; 1;(eib)2)(5)The qi values are determined by writing the equality (T(i)c − Tc,i) = Tc = Cste (∀i) and solving theinvolved linear matrix system. The Rcs value is calculated with the same method previously used.5. ConclusionsAnalytical solutions are proposed to calculate the Rcs due to multiple disk contacts with random positionsand sizes. This configuration is more realistic than the case of regular contacts, widely studied in theliterature. These solutions are accurate and allow to treat thermal contact problems which were few studieduntil now.
