Ursinus College In choosing an appropriate name for the College its founders selected the Latinized name of a German scholar and churchman of the Reformation who had been baptized Zacharias Baer. He was born in Breslau, Germany, in 1534. In 1561 he was appointed head of the theological department of the University of Heidelberg and while there he became the principal author of the Heidelberg Cate-chism. The religious and moral principles of Ursinus College are in essential harmony with those of the man whose distinguished name the College bears. Educational work on what is now the College campus dates back to a primitive schoolhouse built about two centuries ago. It was razed in 1832 when Todd's School was built. This in turn gave way to Freeland Seminary, a private secondary school for young men which was founded in 1848. Three years later Pennsylvania Female College was founded, one of the earliest collegiate institu-tions for women, which was in operation until the late 1870's. Dur-ing the decade of their co-existence Ursinus and Pennsylvania Fe-male College had interlocking faculties and directorates. Ursinus College was founded by a group of members of the German Re-formed Church in 1869. The buildings of Freeland Seminary were bought, and instruction was begun on September 6, 1870. Women were admitted to the College in 1881. 1'he shield-mounted seal in the college colors, red, old gold and bl ack, reproduced on the cover of this fo lder is a gift to the Coll ege from the class of 1913 and was designed and created by the late Dr. Ellwood S. BOMBERGER HALL Recipients of Honrnrairy Degrees TETSUO SEINO is the President of Tohoku Gakuin University, the sister institution of Ursinus College located in Sendai, Japan. President Seino was horn in Yamagata Prefecture outside Sendai and received an undergraduate degree from Tohoku Gakuin. He then studied at Hiro-shima University from which he received a Master of Arts degree in 1943. President Seino studied late medieval English literature at Ohio State University and was awarded a second Master ·of Arts degree in 1951. He joined the faculity of Tohoku Gakuin Univereity in 1954 as a pro-fessor O'f English literature. In 1971, after a productive career as both a soholar and an educator, he was named Dean of the Faculty. He was promoted to serve the institution as Vice-President in 1977. In 1982 he was chosen as the new President ·and Chancellor, replacing the late Presi-dent Dr. Tadao Oda, on whom Ursinus College conferred an honorary degree in 1956. THE ·REVEREND ALBERT E. TESKE, born in Philadelphia, is a graduate of Ursinus College and Mission House Seminary and has com-pleted additional graduate work at Lancaster and ·Princeton Seminaries as well as Temple University. Currently the 'Senior Pastor of the historic New Goshenhoppen Church in East Greenville, he has also served churohes in Linfield and 1P.hiladelphia since his ordination in 1953. In addition, he is President of the Board of Managers of the Wyncote Church Home and a member ·of the Board of Directors of Upper Perkiomen Manor, a retire-ment housing center. Other positions held by the Reverend Mr. Teske include many com-m~ttee memberships and chairmanships in the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ. He has served >as a member of the Board of Directors ·at Cedar Crest College, and has twice been a delegate to the General Synod of the United Church of Christ. He is cur-rently engaged in writing a 'history which recognizes the contributions that ohurch families have made to congregational life in the Goshenhoppen region. Recipients of Honrnraury Degrees (continued1 FRITZ BUSSER, born in the German speaking part of Switzerland, received his classical and university education in Glarus and Zurich. Hav-ing obtained his degree in History, Dr. Busser studied theology. He was a Pastor in Bulach, Switzerland, from 1955 until 1966 when he became Professor of Church and Dogma history at the University of Zurich. Soon afterward he was also appointed Director of the Institute <>f Swiss Refor-mation History. Past president of the Zwingli Association, Dr. Busser is a member of several learned societies as well ,as <the current President of the Emil Brunner Foundation. A frequent guest leoturer at universities and scho-larly mee<tings in Europe and the United States, Dr. Busser is author, co· author and editor of ~mportant studies on John Calvin, Huldreich Zwingli, the works of Zwingli ,and others. Since 1972 he has been in charge of the multi-volume edition of the works and papers of Heinrich Bullinger, Zwingli's successor as leader of <the Zurich reformation. "In executing the monument to Zacharias Ursinus, I felt it was most important that the sculpture be built on the same principles which were embraced by Ursinus and are embodied in his work. As with the work of Ursinus, I have chosen a posture which is straightforward and without heroic gesture. A good deal of attention has been paid to detail and nuance while striving to remain true to the simple form of the whole. Structured on the cross and interlocking circles, symbolic of God, the sculpture is an interplay of ordered and free-flowing forms, of intellect and emotion, of literal and symbolic, solidly anchored and upwardly soaring." The idea is not to honor the man, rather to share in his spirit." - MICHAEL B. PRICE The Artist: Michael B. Price is associate professor of art and chairman of that department at Hamline University, St. Paul, Minnesota. He holds the MFA degree from Tulane University and earned the MA and AB in Mathematics at the University of Illinois. He has held several one-man shows in galleries in New York City and exhibited in this country and South America. Another of Mr. Price's commissioned works, "John and Lydia Morris", can be seen at Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia. The work was commissioned by Dr. and Mrs. Philip I. Berman of Allentown. Dr. Berman is chairman of Hess's Department Stores, headquartered in Allentown, and of the Pennsylvania Public Television Network Commission. The Berman's many gifts for and to Ursinus College include: Upheaval II, The Bearkeeper, and Philadelphia Cakewalk '83.
