For more information, please contact aprock@ursinus.edu. Zacharias U rsinus Ursinus College was named for one of the 16th century Reformers, less well known by name than some but no less influential. Zacharias Ursinus was born in 1534 in Breslau, Germany. The family name was Baer (which accounts for the bear figuring prominently in the traditions of U rsinus College), and as Zacharias Baer he was baptized. But, "according to the fashion of the learned world in that period," Zacharias Baer adopted the Latinized version of his family name (Latin "ursus" meaning "bear") and the Reformer is known to us as in history by the name of Zacharias U rsinus. The importance of Ursinus in Reformation history and the distinctive character of The Heidelberg Catechism, of which he was the primary if not the sole author, can be understood only in light of the tensions which developed in Germany in the early days of the Reformation between the followers of Martin Luther and the followers of Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin. The two segments of Protestantism were really in substantial agreement. The difference which arose were due in large part to the degree of emphasis each group placed on one aspect of the Christian life. The Lutherans emphasized the Christian life as being lived in ''the freedom of forgiven sonship." The Zwingli-Calvin, or Reformed, group stressed "conformity to the will of God as set forth in the Bible" as being the essence of the Christian life. Lutherans emphasized the grace and love of God. The Reformed segment emphasized the sovereignty of God. Unfortunately each group came to hold its particular emphases so tenaciously that harsh rivalries developed between them. Among Lutherans a young theologian of "Vittenberg University, Philip Melanchthon, tried to mediate between the holders of extreme views. Zacharias Ursinus studied under Melanchthon at Wittenberg for about seven years. Eventually, in 1561, he became Professor of Theology at the University of Heidelberg where the Reformed tradition had come to predominate. The ruler of that part of Germany asked Ursinus to prepare a catechism which would incorporate the best of both the Lutheran and the Reformed empha ses and thu s bridge the widening gulf between the two segments of Protestantism. The Heidelberg Catechi sm-129 questions and answers- was the resu lt. A 19th century German scholar characterized this work of Ursinus as having "Lutheran inwardness, Melanchthonian clearness, Zwinglian simp licity, and Calvinistic fire, harmoniously blended". An American church historian described it as "the most sweet-spirited and experiential of the expositions of Calvinism." It became, as Will Durant has said, "the accepted expression of the Reformed faith in Germany and Holland," and enjoyed wide use and official sanction in Scotland. It was this catechism which was brought to America by German Reformed pastors and lay people whose descendants established U rsinus College. Zacharias Ursinus was only twenty-nine years old when in 1563 The Heidelberg Catechism was first published. It is this volume which reflects "the principles repre-sented by him whose distinguished name the College bears" to which reference is made in the Constitution of U rsinus College. Stephen Harry Wurster Recipients of Honorary Degrees WALTER KING BEATTIE, since 1947 pastor of Christ Reformed Church (United Church of Christ) at Indian Creek, near Souderton, Pennsylvania, is a graduate of Ursinus College ( 1923), Central Theological Seminary ( 1926), with a Master of Sacred Theology degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia ( 1939) . Since his ordination in 1927, his pastorates included the Union Charge, Clark County, Ohio, and the Ple asa ntville Reformed Church, Eureka, Pennsylvania. After a brief term as field secretary for the Hoffman Home for Children at Littlestown, Pennsylvania, he spent four years as a wartime industrial counsellor and as a Veterans' Servict Center counsellor. He has served on the Board of Managers of the Reformed Church Home for the Aged at Wyncote; as a member and onetime cha irman of Philadelphia Synod's Committee on Un ited Promotion'; at present as a member of the Synod's Committee on Stewardship and as pa stora l advisor to the Philadelphia Federation of the Churchmen's Brotherhood. He is a past president of the Souderton-Telford Rota ry Club, and a member of the Scotch-Irish Society of Pennsylvania. He has contributed articles to various denominational periodicals. ROY CLARK SNYDER, since September, 1961, president of the Potomac Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed constituency in the United Church of Christ, had been vice-president of the sa me body since 1957. He is a grad uate of Ursinus College (1941} and the Lanca ster Theological Seminar~ (1944}, and was a specia l student at Cornell Univers ity in 1945. Since his ordination in 1944, his pa storates have included Trinity Charge, New Bloomfield ( 1943-45), Dallastown Charge (1946-49}, First and St. Stephen's Church, Baltimore, Maryland (1949-58), and Zion Church, Hagerstown, Maryland ( 1958-61) . Hi s major synodical interest was in the field of Christian education. He has been a member of the Corporation of Lancaster Seminary since 1957, and since the establishment of the United Church of Christ he has served as secretary-t reasurer of the organization of Conference Executives. His pastor-ates have been distinguished by a wide range of community activities and interests. THEODORE RAYMOND SCHWALM, president and founder ( 1947) of Theodore R. Schwalm, Inc., Manufacturers of Watch Dials, Lanca ster, Pennsylvania , and vice-president of the Electronic Test Equipment Manufacturing Company, is a director of the Way Oil Company, Lanca ster, the Geneva Dial Corporation, New York City, member of the American Ordnance Association and the American Society of Tool Engineers, past president of the American E lectroplaters Society. He is a graduate of the Thaddeus Stevens Trade School. Mr. Schwalm is a distinguished layman of the Evangelical and Reformed constituency in the recently established United Church of Christ. He was president (1960-62} of the national Churchmen's Brotherhood, and is now vice-president of United Church Men of the Nationa l Council of Churches, vice-p resident of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, and a member of the General Board of the Nationa l Council of Churches. An active member of Hamilton Park United Church of Christ, where he has served as deacon and elder, he has represented his church in Lancaster Synod and has been a delegate to the General Synod of his denomination. Civic activities hav_e included service on the YMCA board of directors, YWCA board of trustees, the Community Council, and the Lancaster Inter-Racial Council. JAMES ILEY McCORD, President of Princeton Theological Seminary, oldest and largest theological seminary of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., is a graduate of Austin College (1938), did his seminary work at the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, receiving his Bachelor of Divinity degree from the latter. He did graduate study at the University of Texas (M.A.), Harvard University, and New College, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He ha s received honorary doctorates from Austin College, Maryville College, Davidson College, Lafayette College, Knox College (Toronto}, Princeton Unive rsity, and the honorary Doctor of Theology degree from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is chairman of The Editoria l Counci l of Th eology Today, a member of the Editorial Council of lntei·pretation, and General Editor of Calviniana Su.pplcmenta, the monumental project of publication of the hitherto unpubli shed works of John Calvin. He has lectured at theological semin ar ies in Canada, Bra zil, Scotland, and continental Europe. He is a member of the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches, chairman of the Advisory Committee on Faith and Order of the National Council of Churches, chairman of the Department of Theology of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, and secretary of the North American Area of the Alliance. For fifteen years he was Dean and Professor of Theology at the Austin Seminary, and for eight years of this period was also a member of the faculty at the University of Texas. He became President and Professor of Theology at the Princeton Seminary in 1959. Two Centuries of Education The dream and venture of education at Ursinus College goes back two centuries to a primitive log schoolhouse. That ancient building was razed in 1832 when Todd's School, named after Andrew Todd who donated the tract of land on which it was built, was opened "for the use of the neighborhood and its vicinity." The town was then known as Perkiomen Bridge, now Collegeville. In 1848 Freeland Seminary, a school for the higher education of young men, was established on land adjacent to the Todd's School tract; and over the next twenty years many hundred s of young men from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware attended Freeland Seminary. Three years later, on October 27, 1851, the Montgomery Female Seminary, claimed by some to have been "the first female college in the U.S. A.111 was opened in the Fetterolf House w hich is sti ll being used by Ursinus College as a residence hall for men. This school was chartered by the Pennsylvania Legislature on April 6, 185 3, as the Pennsylvania Female College, and by 1870 "at least 999 young women" had studied in the college and its preparatory department. Its work continued until the late 1870's, and for the decade of their co-existence Ursinus and Pennsylvania Female College had interlocki ng faculties and directorates. T he 1860's brought a sharpening of convictions in the old German Reformed Church on matters of doctrine, worship, and church government. This produced among its many fruits a desire on the part of some pastors and laymen to found a college "where the youth of the land can be liberally educated under the benign influence of Christianity." Ursinus College was chartered by the Pennsylvania Legislature on February S, 1869, and, after the purchase of the former Freeland Seminary buildings, opened its doors for the reception of stud ents on Tuesday, September 61 1870. Approximately forty students were enrolled that first day. By the end of the year a total of 119 had been in attend ance. As amended in more recent years, in language believed to be fully consistent with the aim of the found ers, Article I of the Constitution of Ursinus College states it s Purpose and Principles as follows: "Section 1. The purpose of the Board of Directors of Ursinus College is to provide and maintain an institution where youth can be liberally educated in accordance with Christian principles. "Section 2. The religious and moral principles of Ursinus College shall always be those of the evangelical protestant church, in essential historical harmony with the principles rep resented by him whose distinguished name the College bears. "Section 3. No student who is willing to comply with the rules and regulations of the College shall be excluded from its privileges on account of his race or his religion."
