In addition to lowering vehicle-animalcollisions, these structures can considerably lower wildlifemortality (Wildlife Migration, 2022).The idea was first developed in France in 1950. The Netherlandsfollowed with over 600 crosses and is home to the world's longesthike, the Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo, (0.5 miles). Currently thesecrosses can also be found in Australia, Canada and other parts ofthe world such as the United States. (Nationalgeographic 2022).Construction of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing project willinclude the incorporation of seeds and vegetation for propagationand replanting. For example, rodents prefer to use small pipes or reptilesprefer to use smaller crossings full of vegetation.The vegetation will be carefully selected so as not to alter theecosystem and help to increase the acceptance of the species.The use of chemicals or pesticides will be avoided, predominatingthat it be an ecological crossing.It is suggested to develop an education plan to create awarenessof wildlife, and place security cameras that allow monitoring of thecrossings. (Beier, Paul et al. 2008).ELEMENT QUALITYELEMENT PEOPLEThis project has been in development for almost a decade. TheNWF and Caltrans proposed a corridor in 2015, and theAnnenberg Foundation issued a $1 million challenge grant toencourage donations in 2016. More than 3,000 private, charitable,and corporate organizations from all around the world donated tothe project, which assisted NWF in raising enough money to startconstruction in 2025. (Annenberg Foundation 2022).The Guardian (2022) reports the covered cost 60% private donations and 40% public funs.
