Nájera and the Chivalric in Ayala : extent, limits, intentionality

Abstract

Resumen: En el conjunto de las Crónicas ayalianas, en torno al episodio de la batalla de Nájera se cre a un clima en el que predomina el tema caballeresco, cuyos posibles excesos se señalan en otras ocasiones . Se acumulan en dicho episodio referencias a hechos, pautas de conducta y actitude s modélicas en diversos personajes que ocupan el centro de la escena . En el marco general del texto , la funcionalidad de estos elementos consiste en oscurecer, por contraste, la figura del rey don Pedro , que en la comparación resulta totalmente deslucida . Es así un factor más, hábilmente manejado po r el cronista, en el proceso de destruir la legitimidad del monarca y de levantar la figura del pretendiente don Enrique .Abstract: In the group of Ayala ' s chronicles, the episode of the battle of Nájera is told in an atmosphere where the chivalric subject predominates, even though its excesses are pointed out in other occasions . In this episode there is an accumulation of referentes to facts, behavior patterns and exemplar y attitudes in the different main characters . In the text considerad as a whole, these elements help t o darken, by the means of contrast, the figure of King Don Pedro, that results absolutely dull i n comparison . Therefore it is one of the factors, artfully handled by the chronicler, used in the proces s of destroying the King's legitimacy and raise the figure of the aspiring Don Enrique
