Teaching Digital Citizenship and Social Emotion Learning Together:A Comprehensive Literature ReviewIntroduction Digital Literacy Skills ModelFuture Study• The connections between digi tal ci tizenship education and social emotionallearning are growing, but there is a relatively small amount of researchava ilable to connect these two subject areas.• There is a need to move digi tal ci ti zenship education forward for our studentswith the emotional support aspect that is not often seen in digi tal ci tizenshipprograms.• Curriculum needs to be identi fied to provide digi tal ci ti zenship and socialemotional guidance for teachers and students based on the Eshet-AlkalaiModel .• Explore how to advance digi tal ci tizenship education by exploring the moraldecisions and incivility Harrison and Polizzi (2022) saw in adolescents online.There is an increasing number of incidentsof students who abuse their right to be onsocial media . These students lack the digi talci tizenship skills to be upstanding onlineci tizens. Along with this, s tudent mentalhealth issues have also increased in thepast five years . Teachers are trying toincrease student emotional learning tobecome more thoughtful ci tizens in society.These two topics are inter-related and driveeach other in promoting strong ci ti zenshipin person and online.Background• Teaching students how to respect each otherwhile on social media will lead to students beingrespectful and empathetic to each other (Jones &Mitchell, 2016; Sprenger, 2020).• Extensive digi tal media use results in social andemotional issues that are linked to pooracademic performance (Probst, 2017).• Eshet-Alkalai’s Digital Li teracy Model (2012) willprovide students with both areas of learning andensure students are able to use their socio-emotional skills to evaluate data, thinkabstractly, and collaborate virtually effectively.• These skills provide students with a solidfoundation for understanding digi tal li teracywhile using intelligence and emotional quotientsskills to navigate and survive cyberspace (Eshet-Alka lai, 2012).Jill K Baird, MSEshet-Alkalai, Y.
