These metals, such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic, can be released into water through varioushuman activities, including mining, industrial production, agriculture, and improper waste disposal. Once heavy metals enter water, theycan accumulate in sediments and aquatic life, which can have negative effects because they can also be toxic to humans and cause arange of health problems, such as kidney damage, neurological disorders, respiratory problems, liver damage, cardiovascular diseasesand cancer.For this reason, it is important to seek a possible solution to this issue. Bacterial cellulose is a type of cellulose formed by different typesof bacteria, with K.xylinus being one of the most common. This material can be used for the capture of heavy metals present in water, asits surface contains hydroxyl functional groups (-OH), which facilitate the attraction of ions. Additionally, thanks to these functionalgroups, bacterial cellulose can also be modified with different materials to increase metal adsorption.RESULTSThree different morphologies of bacterial cellulose have been obtained.The first one is BC membranes, which grow in static media. The second one is BC spheres, which grow in dynamic media, at a speed ofapproximately 130 rpm. The third one is a BC aerogel, which is obtained after lyophilizing several previously obtained membranes.1.
