Calibrating a world black over red. Visual, morpho-technical and temporal analysis of Belén pottery from the Fiambalá region (Catamarca, 13th-15th centuries)

Abstract

Articulamos el análisis visual y morfo-técnico con los fechados radiocarbónicos de las piezas del estilo Belén provenientes del oeste de Tinogasta, para evaluar la existencia de cambios y continuidades en términos visuales, técnicos y morfológicos (formas y contornos), y discutir su valor cronológico. El conjunto cerámico analizado forma parte de colecciones depositadas en museos públicos o privados y en instituciones gubernamentales y/o educativas, que difieren en la calidad de la información complementaria asociada, tanto contextual como documental. Este acercamiento permitió: (i) reafirmar la profunda reiteración de imágenes, técnicas, morfologías y modos de organizar el espacio plástico que perduran en el tiempo; (ii) identificar ciertos cambios fundamentalmente en los repertorios temáticos y técnicos que, al menos en la región de Fiambalá, permiten plantear diferencias cronológicas entre las piezas Belén; y (iii) comenzar a asignarle una temporalidad tentativa a las piezas provenientes de excavaciones asistemáticas y depositadas en las Colecciones sin información cronológica.In order to evaluate the existence of changes and continuities in visual, technical and morphological terms (forms and contours) and to discuss their chronological value, the visual and morpho-technical analysis are articulated with the radiocarbon dates of the Belén style pottery from western Tinogasta. The ceramic assemblage analyzed is part of collections deposited in public or private museums and in government and/or educational institutions, which differ in the quality of the associated complementary information, both contextual and documentary. This approach allowed: (i) to reaffirm the deep reiteration of images, techniques, morphologies and ways of organizing the plastic space that endure over time; (ii) to identify certain changes, fundamentally, in the thematic and technical repertoires that, at least in the Fiambalá region, allow us to establish chronological differences between the Belén vessels; and (iii) to begin to assign a tentative temporality to vessels from unsystematic excavations deposited in the Collections without chronological information.Trabajos presentados en las I Jornadas de Arqueología del Noroeste Argentino: Trayectorias, diálogos y saberes (IJAN) (Jujuy, 28 de marzo al 1 de abril del 2022).Sociedad Argentina de Antropologí
