Those with Germanwill derive considerable benefit from themajor discussions of such themes as"reason" (Vernunft), "understanding"(Verstehen), and universals, to say nothingof a whole cluster ofnegative terms,from "immortality" to "ignorance"(Unwissenheit). Those with only a limitedacquaintance with a few technical termsmay still gain from the copiousbibliographies.This volume, although it has much to'offer on wider themes, such as "nation"(Volk), "kinship" (Verwandschaft), and"universal language", has relatively little forthe medical historian. But there is a briefbut eloquent exposition ofthe meaning of"university" (although without mentioningNewman), and an even longer discussion of"causation" (Ursache). "Providence","prognosis", and "prophecy" are treated ina series oflinked articles (Voraussage,Voraussicht, Vorherwissen, Vorsehung), thatpay proper attention to the development ofthese concepts within medical, as well as themore obvious religious and philosophical,contexts.Galen, Anatomicarum administrationumlibri qui supersunt novem: earundeminterpretatio Arabica Hunaino Isaacifilioascripta, tomus alter libros V-IX continens,ed. I Garofalo, Annali dell'IstitutoUniversitario Orientale de Napoli, Quaderni4, Naples, Istituto Universitario Orientale,2000, pp.435, (ISSN 1128-7217).This specialist volume is the second andfinal part of a critical edition of the firstnine books of the extant Greek of Galen'sDe anatomicis administrationibus, togetherwith the Arabic translation from the circleof the renowned Nestorian physician andphilologist, Hunayn ibn Ishaq (d. 873 AD). Itshould not be inferred, however, thatHunayn's text is meant to be a literaltranslation of Galen's Greek. Garofalo'searlier work (books I-IV) was published in1986. Since then, as he states in the prefaceto this book, he has had the benefit ofthirteen years of additional scholarship in achallenging and rewarding field. Thisvolume provides a comprehensive set ofindexes in Greek and Arabic, and a list ofadditions and corrections to the firstvolume. Whilst this reviewer cannot passjudgement on the Arabic text, it is apleasure to possess a critical edition thatcompletes the extant Greek of thisimportant work, and in a well-presentedformat that is kind to the eye. It is to behoped that Garofalo intends producing acritical successor to Max Simon's 1906edition of books IX, 6-XV. One would alsolike to think that a CMG edition of thecomplete text ofDe anatomicisadministrationibus will appear in the not toodistant future. The143Book Noticesmaterial (Greek or Latin text with Germantranslation on the facing page) is organizedinto sections on 'Medicine and society','Theory: the conception of the female bodyin medicine', 'Practice: gynaecology andfertility', 'Pregnancy, birth, and lying-in';and followed by a brief introduction to thedevelopment of classical medicine ingeneral, and to various aspects of itsconceptual and practical dealings withwomen. Additional background on theauthors and texts used, a bibliography andglossary complete the work. The selectionof excerpts is somewhat limited with theHippocratic Corpus, Galen, and Soranusproviding the great majority of thepassages, and no space for such alternativemedical voices from the Roman Empire asAretaeus the Cappadocian or Rufus ofEphesus, nor for views from lateantiquity but this is undoubtedly a usefulGerman language resource.BOOKS ALSO RECEIVED(The inclusion of a title does not precludethe possibility of subsequent review.
