The atmosphere of the place is festive, and many young women come to the hermitage with the idea of finding a boyfriend. She boards the Steamboat El Dorado for a trip down the Amazon River along with several passengers who are traveling to hear her sing. Rosalba is beginning to fall in love with the steamboat captain's nephew, Arcadio, who rescues her notebook when it falls overboard. Mario arrives, wanting to speak to Pablo but waits as the couple embraces. Paquiro, his rival has challenged him to a duel. Fernando makes ready to leave, and Rosario clings to him, begging him to stay. Fernando tears himself away, promising to return victorious, and leaves. Rosario follows, and the duel begins. Two screams signal the end of the duel, one by Fernando being mortally wounded, the other by Rosario. Paquiro flees. Rosario drags the mortally wounded Fernando to the bench where they had just shared a tender moment. El Duende, a character that represents the night life of the city appears to introduce all the characters of the story, including María, El Gorrion (an ex-lover) and various members of the city’s underworld . A scenes program is a great way to introduce a new audience member into the world of opera. It gives the new listener a glimpse of the style and music of several works at once. To other audience members more used to seeing opera, it gives them a glimpse of a fascinating repertoire that is often neglected. As an educator, a scenes program such as this one gives me the opportunity to work with students from different levels of experience. Instead of focusing on the sets or costumes, we focus on the storytelling through operatic techniques.It has been a pleasure developing these characters, stories and music with the students. We hope you enjoy the performance.ABOUT THE DIRECTORStage director Octavio Cárdenas captivates audiences with his visionary, visceral, and physical style of directing. Born in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, Opera News has praised him for creating “an immersive theater experience” while the Dallas Morning News hailed him for bringing “every character and situation to life.” Recent projects include Lohengrin by Salvatore Sciarrino as a pop-up digital opera installation: a site-specific opera for COVID times in collaboration with artist Lance McGoldrick and Opera Southwest, and Cruzar la cara de la Luna with Opera Santa Barbara.Mr. Cárdenas’ recent productions of Silent Night for Fort Worth Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City were described as “a breathtaking realization” with “many brilliant touches.” The Kansas City Star called the Lyric Opera’s production “one of its finest performances in recent memory.” Other recent productions include La bohème for Minnesota Opera to which the Star Tribune acclaimed, “what makes the production a success, is Octavio Cárdenas’ staging.” His production of As One for UrbanArias was acclaimed by MD Theater Guide, “Under the direction of Octavio Cárdenas, the two stars playfully make great use of both stage and energetic space—it seemed the theatre condensed and expanded with Hannah’s journey.”He has served as the head of directing saff at Des Moines Metro Opera and has also been on the directing staff at Chautauqua Opera. Mr. Cárdenas is currently the director of opera at Chapman University.
