Yes, but in a good way.  OnJuly 23, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 2p.m., therapy dogs will be on thesecond floor of the USA BiomedicalLibrary, located on USA’s maincampus. Judy Burnham, directorof the USA Biomedical Library, saidthe dogs will be available to helpstudents de-stress for final exams.Pet therapy has becomeincreasingly common in hospitalsand schools across the country.The animals help to reducefeelings of stress and anxiety byproviding unconditional love. Foryears, USA Children’s & Women’sHospital has provided therapy dogs to help patients recover from and better copewith health problems. Seven individuals from institutions throughout the Southeastwere selected to participate.As part of the program, Gunter is working in the research department at theLakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, a recreation and fitness facility for peoplewith a wide range of disabilities. While there, he is assisting in administration oftesting, helping with the facility’s summer camps, and recruiting people toparticipate in research projects.“This experience is going to be extremely helpful in learning the entire researchprocess, from submitting grants all the way to being published,” he said. “Wehave weekly seminars that focus on each step in the process, along withmeetings with our mentors to answer any questions we have.”Gunter’s research project involves finding difficulties that kids with spinal cordinjuries have when playing active video games – such as Xbox Kinect andNintendo Wii – so that modifications can be made in the future to allow them abetter game play experience. USA Children’s &Women’s Hospital is a strength for the pediatrics and obstetrics & gynecologyresidency programs as well as the new child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship,while the surgery program is intensely involved in the trauma and burn servicesat USA Medical Center. The USA Regional Stroke Center and the USACardiovascular Diseases Center at USA Medical Center provide the learningenvironment for the neurology residency and cardiology fellowships.Furthermore, the pathology and radiology programs have the advantage of theUSA Mitchell Cancer Institute added onto the hospitals' studies. Primary careprograms, such as the internal medicine and family medicine residencyprograms, reach out into the surrounding community, providing health care innumerous outpatient settings throughout Mobile and Baldwin Counties.Dr. McQuiston, who is also assistant professor of radiology and former co-directorof the radiology residency program, said GME training is a process of learning bydoing. “As residents and fellows gain experience and demonstrate growth in theirability to care for patients, they assume roles that permit them to exercise thoseskills with greater independence, allowing for graded and progressiveresponsibility,” he said.The teaching environment USA provides is among the strengths of its trainingprograms, according to Dr. McQuiston. “The fact that we are a teaching hospitalmotivates the faculty to remain current on the standards of care in their fields,”he said. “This definitively distinguishes teaching hospitals from all others.”According to Dr. McQuiston, more than 60 percent of residents and fellows willpractice within a two- to three-hour drive of where they train. “Many come hereselecting the central Gulf Coast for the long term. Others move to the area fortraining, fall in love with the incredible lifestyle that living on the Gulf provides,and subsequently choose to stay,” he said. This impacts both the economy andquality of life in our region.This year, USA recruited its 62 new residents from 37 different medical schools;only 17 of the 62 individuals were from outside the geographic south. USA andUAB were the largest schools represented with 13 and 5 individuals respectively.“The USA Health System plays a critical role in supplying competent physiciansfor Mobile and the adjoining region,” Dr. McQuiston said. “This is an excellentexample of the far-reaching positive impact academic health centers have in thesurrounding community.”T u e s d a y ,  J u l y  1 5 ,  2 0 1 4Med School Café - Expert Advice for the Community1/19/23, 10:26 AM Med School Watercooler: 7/13/14 - 7/20/14https://medschoolwatercooler.blogspot.com/2014_07_13_archive.html 4/5On June 19, Dr. Lynn Batten, director of the division of pediatric cardiology at theUniversity of South Alabama, presented the June Med School Cafe lecture.During the lecture, titled “Sudden Cardiac Death in Athletes and the ScreeningControversy,” Dr. Batten discussed cardiac arrest in young athletes. According toDr. Batten, a young athlete dies of sudden cardiac arrest every three days.Current screening techniques for athletes consist of a physical exam and aquestionnaire aimed at asking about important family history or symptomsassociated with exercise, but the screenings do not include electrocardiograms(EKG) or echocardiograms (echo). Dr. Batten will review the most commoncauses of sudden cardiac death and why there is controversy over currentscreening recommendations.Watch the video below to view the lecture in its entirety.The next Med School Cafe lecture will feature Dr. Ghazanfar H.
