A presente dissertação de mestrado com o título “O Contributo de Alexandre da Cunha
Teles (1891-1936) para a Sociedade Madeirense dos Inícios do Século XX” procura em
linhas gerais apresentar o percurso de vida, ideológico, político e social do biografado
em estudo na sociedade madeirense da época. O cerne deste trabalho de investigação
pretende identificar o seu contributo por intermédio das medidas e intervenções
apresentadas e introduzidas nas instituições a que presidiu, como o Asilo de
Mendicidade e Órfãos, Sociedade Protetora dos Animais Domésticos, Delegação da
Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa e onde esteve como vogal, como a Junta Geral do Distrito
do Funchal. O estudo encerra com as considerações e homenagens na sua despedida, o
reconhecimento do trabalho desenvolvido e a sua memória. A investigação teve como
principais fontes os acervos documentais e jornalísticos disponíveis na Biblioteca e
Arquivo Regional da Madeira, Biblioteca Municipal do Funchal e livros de atas da Cruz
Vermelha Portuguesa do Funchal.The present master's thesis entitled "O Contributo de Alexandre da Cunha Teles (1891-
1936) for the Madeira Society of the Beginnings of the 20th Century" seeks in general
lines to present the life, ideological, political and social path of the biographer under
study in Madeira society at the time. The core of this research work aims to identify his
contribution through the measures and interventions presented and introduced in the
institutions he presided over, such as the Asilo de Mendicidade e Órfãos, Sociedade
Protetora dos Animais Domésticos, Delegation of the Portuguese Red Cross where he
was a member, and a vowel on the General Board of the District of Funchal. The study
ends with the considerations and tributes in his farewell, the recognition of the work
developed and his memory. The investigation had as main sources the documentary and
journalistic collections available in the Madeira Regional Library and Archive, Funchal
Municipal Library and minutes books of the Portuguese Red Cross of Funchal
