frequency domain of HRV analysis: power of low frequencyband (rho¼ 0.47), power of high frequency band (rho¼-0.47), ratio of low to high frequency power (rho¼ 0.49).In our conditions, 24 h recording was a good tool to defineindividual basal level of HR and variations due to the dailyroutine management; HRV efficiently detected expected differ-ences in coping with stressful conditions (PR vs PL at milk-ing) and was correlated to a known indicator of stressresponse (steps at milking). Atotal of 15 Piemontese breed bulls reared in a tied stall hous-ing system (farm A) and 15 Piemontese, 15 Blonded’Aquitaine (from France) and 15 cross-breed (from Ireland)reared in pen for groups (farm B, C and D, respectively)were considered. A welfare protocol including a checklist andthe “RIBECA” scoring system (formulated by CRPA) was pre-pared for the assessment of animal based measures (e.g.BCS, Avoidance distance test, ocular and nasal discharge,diarrhea) and resource based measures (e.g. appropriatehousing and feeding, space, temperature). Some blood param-eters were also analyzed: WBC, % of neutrophils, lymphocytes,monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, RBC, HGB, HCT, N/L ratio(ADVIAVR 120, Siemens), total protein, albumin, CK, creatinine,AST, LDH, cholesterol, glucose, triglyceride (ILab Aries,Instrument, Werfen) and dROMs (dROMs test, DIACRONINTERN. IT). Observations and blood samples were performed2 times: 3 weeks after the arrival of the animals on the fat-tening farm (T0) and after 5 months (T1). Comparisonsbetween animal groups within T0 and T1 were performed byOne-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test, while data betweenT0 and T1 within each group were analyzed by Student’s tand Wilcoxon tests (GraphPad PrismVR software, p< .05).Animal-based score was not significantly different betweenthe farms, while total welfare score was “poor” for farm A(tied stall system), “fair” for farms B and D and “very good”for farm C. Irish cross-breed were the most fearful. Bloodfindings suggest that Irish cross-breed showed the worstadaptation (WBC, neutrophils, the N/L ratio, albumin, CK, glu-cose, creatinine and LDH increased at T1; p< .01) whereasBlonde d’Aquitaine cattle were well adapted (WBC, monocytes,eosinophils and basophils decreased at T1; p< .01, dROMswere significantly lower in this group; p< .01). The twogroups of Piemontese bulls did not show significantdifferences.The results obtained in the present study suggest that paralleluse of both animal-based and resource-based measures ispreferable for animal welfare assessment.AcknowledgementsThis work was partially supported by the Fondazione CRC,Italy.
