Exploring Imami Shia Perspectives on the Quran in Bihar Al-Anwar by Al-Majlisy as a Reference for Understanding the Quran

Abstract

This study analyzes the significance of Bihar Al-Anwar, a book of Hadith, as a reference for Shia Muslims, specifically the Imami Shia, in understanding the Quran. Using a qualitative approach, the primary source, Bihar Al-Anwar by Al-Imam Al-Majlisy, and secondary sources are examined to explore Imami Shia perspectives on the character of the Quran. The research highlights the dual mission of the analysis, which is to strengthen Shia ideologies internally and to gain Sunni approval or socialize Shia ideology with Sunni Muslims. The Hadiths utilized in the analysis are rational and scientific but must also align with the teachings of the Imams, making it challenging for the Quran to speak for itself. Despite criticisms from Sunnis, Bihar Al-Anwar remains a proud work of Imami Shia in Hadith. The book provides several Shia views on the Quran, including its exoteric and esoteric dimensions, its comprehensive knowledge, the infallible Imams' understanding of its knowledge, and its classification into muhkamat and mutasyabihat, with the latter requiring interpretation by a ma'sum priest. Overall, this research offers valuable insights into the Imami Shia perspective on the Quran and highlights the significance of Bihar Al-Anwar in the study of Shia Hadith
