A team of researchers at Queen Mary University of London have created a short film exploring the oral health experiences of community returners (ex-offenders) and their experiences of accessing healthcare on release.The eight-minute movie was inspired from hearing the stories of those who had a lived experience of the criminal justice system and their struggles in accessing dental care. The script has been written by those with lived experience. It features professional actors Ric Renton and Megan Samuels who were hired through Synergy Theatre Project.  The film is produced by Nurull Islam from Mile End Community and directed by Dr Joelle Booth of Queen Mary’s Institute of Dentistry. Dr Booth. The film hopes to stimulate conversation, change perceptions and inform oral health research priorities for this group.  The project has already won awards for its innovative design and there is interest to host screenings across the UK to raise awareness of this important issue.
