International symposium onbiological models held at Hrubé Skalé in1984 the project on categorization of labo—ratory rats and mice was discussed (Kliret al. 1984). The project was worked up bythe Physiological Institute in cooperationwith the Institute of Molecular Genetics,both of the CSAV. The purpose of thisproject was to unify and to extend thenationally admitted genetic nomenclatureand t0 delimitate the extent of geneticmonitoring of the breeding colonies oflaboratory animals and from the viewpointof the health conditions to delimitate thecategories, extent and frequence of theircontrol.This project was accepted both by theCSAV and by some other institutions. Therealization of the project depends on theestablishing of reference workplaces andskilled collectives responsible for healthexamination. VIn the field of activity of the CSAVtwo diagnostic reference centres have beenestablished during the past two years. Thecentre for the laboratory mouse has beenestablished in the biomodels departmentof the Institute of Molecular Genetics andTable 1. Since weshall not describe the genetic monitoring inour paper, we have concentrated our in-terest 0n the health control only whichis involved in the categorization projectand given by the delimitation of undesir-able microorganisms in each animal cate—gory. In the following Tables 1, 2, 3, athe-matic survey of every kind of agens andtheir delimitation within the categories isTable 3.given. Besides, con-taminated, ill and suspiciously fresh diedanimals, blood serum and faeces of severalexternal breeds were examined in labora-tory. The results are presented in theTable 6.We should like to mention that in animalsshowing clinical manifestations of disease,in animals suspected, ill or freshly died,also the pathological examination was per-formed.The control proved that the animals ofthe individual categories are up to thedemands on health condition and c0n~tamination with microorganisms for thegiven category.On the basis of our short experience inthe health control, we can summarize:1. The reliability of finding undesirableagens has increased due to regularlyrepeated examinations and due to theselection of animal age category.2. The kind of methods applied is decisiveas to the demand of time and laborious—ness of the examination.3. To evaluate the examination resultsmerely according to the number ofcollected and examined samples is pre-mature. The number of samples is oneof the criteria only.4.
