An engineer of the 21st century should focus on working with the latest technologies, doing research work on current issues and finding technically competent solutions. Such professional training cannot be carried out without students’ participation in scientific research. The need for the integration of higher education and science is emphasized in a number of regulatory and legal acts of different levels. National Strategy of Development of Education in Ukraine for the period until 2021 envisages the development of scientific and innovative activities in education [2, p. 2]. The Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education” (Clause 1, Article 65) stipulates that scientific, scientific and technical and innovative activities in institutions of higher education are an integral part of educational activities [1, p. 86]. In the process of professionally oriented foreign language training, research activity plays an equally important role, since a future engineer cannot do without using modern foreign scientific achievements in professional activities. Scientific and research activities of students in the process of foreign language training contribute to:  search for information;  analysis of foreign language sources;  deepening of knowledge in the professional sphere;  establishing contacts, expanding the communication sphere, interests;  competitiveness on the labor market;  application of the latest scientific and technical achievements in the professional sphere. Therefore, the main means of implementing scientific and research activities in the process of foreign language training are:  use of current sources on topical issues of science and engineering;  application of information and communication technologies;  ensuring the connection of scientific and research activities in the process of foreign language training with future professional sphere;  specialization of research work from the first year;  doing independent research work. The rating system of knowledge assessment also opens up new perspectives for stimulating students’ scientific research, since it includes a creative component, that is, the student’s rating includes the results of research component. The organization of students’ research work in the process of foreign language training must comply with the following principles:  integration – combination of professional and foreign language training;  systematicity – formation of professional and foreign language knowledge, abilities and skills in a coherent interconnected system;  professional orientation – the content of research activity is oriented towards future professional activity;  mobility – formation of abilities and skills of independent acquisition of knowledge, their creative application in various professional situations, development of the need for constant self-education and self-improvement.According to the concept of implementation of students’ scientific research work, presented in the report of Scientific Conference "Science and Higher Education" (June 2-4, 2014) we consider it expedient to distinguish 3 stages of students’ scientific and research work in the process of foreign language training: 1. Research based – choice of necessary sources of general technical problems, presentation of arguments of logically presented opinions, search tasks. 2. Educational and research – analysis of scientific and technical literature for the purpose of writing annotations, essays. 3. Scientific research – organization of individual research in the form of papers, reports at scientific and practical conferences, scientific papers [3, p. 255]. Methods of students’ research work in the process of foreign language training are the following:methods of research work stimulating (creation of problematic situations that require scientific research in the form of debates, discussions); methods of research work activating (research, search methods, project-based training, web quests); creative methods (case method, round table method, mini conferences, etc.). The peculiarities of the students’ research work during foreign language training process are:  individualization;  informatization;  intensification;  activation;  change the role of the teacher in the educational process;  implementation of cooperative education;  problematic approach to learning;  improvement of the control system of knowledge, skills and abilities acquired by students. Thus, research work is an important condition and means of professional development of the future engineer in the process of foreign language training. References:1.
