Birds as tourist attraction: birdwatching tourism in Cuba and Mato grosso do sul, Brazil

Abstract

El ar t ículo aborda dos exper iencias de tur ismo de observación de aves , la pr imera en Cuba a escala nacional y la segunda en el estado Mato Grosso do Sul , en Brasi l . A par t i r del anál isis de la impor tancia económica del tur ismo de observación de vida si lves t re, se discuten los conceptos de tur ismo de observación de aves y su relación con el tur ismo de naturaleza y el ecotur ismo. Para ambos ter r i tor ios se anal izan las caracter íst icas de la avi fauna,su composición, los hotspots y especies de especial interés, las investigaciones realizadas sobre la misma, la organización de la actividad turística y los mercados fundamentales. Se mencionan los criterios ornitológicos y logísticos que determinan el diseño de los itinerarios turísticos para el segmento más especializado y que explican la estandarización de un modelo espacio-temporal en Cuba y cómo se organiza este turismo en Mato Grosso do Sul, alrededor de eventos y acciones hasta ahora puntuales, que logran una gran participación del segmento nacional en el caso brasileño y del segmento internacional en el caso cubano.ABSTRACT The article discusses two birding tourism experiences, the first in Cuba on a national scale and the second in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil. Based on the analysis of the economic importance of wildlife watching tourism, the concepts of bird watching tourism and its relationship with nature tourism and ecotourism are discussed. For both territories, the characteristics of avifauna, its composition, hotspots and species of special interest, the research carried out on it, the organization of tourist activity and the fundamental markets are analyzed. The ornithological and logistic criteria that determine the design of tourist itineraries for the most specialized segment are mentioned, which explain the standardization of a spatial-temporal model in Cuba and how this tourism is organized in Mato Grosso do Sul, around events and actions that so far have achieved a great participation of the national segment in the Brazilian case and the international segment in the Cuban case
