Portals to the Past: Practical Experience and Theatre Program ExhibitsGroup Members: Ken KanjanaprayutWasi RehmanZhaoyi Li (Mike)Zitian Deng (Bambi)Overview:The theme of the project was ‘Building Community at Sheridan’. Our project included an archival exhibit and an interview exhibit. The archival exhibit talked about how a special type of computer terminal was given to students to help them emulate real-world scenarios with air traffic, which would allow students to improve their skills and understanding of the technology in the real world.The interview exhibit involved interviewing an alumni professor and former program coordinator, Ron Cameron-Lewis. The interview exhibit included a brief summary of Cameron-Lewis’ biography and a brief summary of how his work was relevant to students by giving examples of his alumni who had moved on to big careers.Our group was able to work together asynchronously to accomplish the group work we did. Our members played various roles in our public history project. Mike was often at the forefront of getting everyone together to make sure all our tasks were completed in a timely and efficient manner. Ken played professional and understandable recordings and edits of the audio files. Wasi’s use of proficient English was leveraged to write in an understandable and concise manner. Bambi helped provide research and references throughout the project. Overall, everyone in our group played important functions in efficiently completing the history project.Practical Experience Exhibit The Sheridan Sun 1982—3. vol. 3, Sheridan College, 1982.Text: The 1980s were a period of rapid technological advancement. During this period, Sheridan College provided its’ students with the latest technology in order to help prepare them for their careers.Thanks to the Ontario Ministry of Industry and Tourism, Sheridan was able to acquire 10 minicomputer terminals (seen here). The terminals allowed students to simulate travel and tourist problems with Air Canada’s Reservax system. The system gave students access to two databases: The Dialog database and the University of Toronto’s Automation Library system. Geraldine Hughes, coordinator of the Applied Arts program described how, “The computer terminal will be used by students for doing online cataloging, reference work, circulation work, etc”. Thus, students were able to access advanced technology.Thanks to Sheridan’s investments in emerging technology, students were able to get hands-on experience with real-world simulations, which in turn helped prepare them for real-world experiences.Click here for audio reading of the text by a group member: Theater Program ExhibitText: Ron Cameron-Lewis was a former theatrics professor and coordinator at Sheridan College who taught from 1973 to 2020. Cameron-Lewis achieved much throughout his career. For example, his talent allowed him to adjudicate the Sears Ontario Drama Festival in Northern Ontario, and a 50-State festival in a North Bay high school for two months. For the first time in the latter’s festival, the adjudicator (Ron Cameron-Lewis) received zero negative reviews. Because of his talent, he was thus invited back 7 more times to that festival. In total, Cameron-Lewis had adjudicated at 30 states at state, regional, national, and international festivals.Thanks to Cameron-Lewis, students were able to benefit from his contributions to Sheridan and advance in their careers. This is because the theatrical program of Sheridan had advanced from the original one over the years. The program went from a one-year course to a three-year course during Cameron-Lewis’s stay (and later evolved to a four-year course). Students went from being tough in portables with little resources, all the way to being taught in dedicated theatrical sets, which helped improve students’ ability to get hands-on experience with real-world theatrical tools. Among Ron’s students were those such as Zaib Shaikh who moved on towards working in multiple sets in major studios and Katie Van Exan who now teaches in Scotland.Click here for audio reading of the text by a group member:
