Constructive Connections : building resilience of families affected by the criminal justice system : final report

Abstract

The Stimulus for the Study NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde hadidentified through previous research that therewas a need to engage with families that areaffected by the criminal justice system in orderto improve the experience for children andyoung people. A consortium of two universities supporting aScottish voluntary organisation that workssolely on behalf of families affected byimprisonment was commissioned toundertake a participative research project over18 months to elicit from children, youngpeople, their families and involvedprofessionals what the problems were and toco-produce proposed solutions.An estimated 27,000 children are affectedeach year by parental incarceration inScotland. GIRFEC - Getting It Right For EveryChild, now enshrined in Scottish legislationthrough the Children and Young People(Scotland) Act 2014, is a sound building blockfor supporting children whose parents comeinto contact with the criminal justice system
