Tactical Urbanism: strategies and design for public space in Ascoli Piceno

Abstract

The paper presents an experience of Tactical Urbanism currently underway in the city of Ascoli Piceno. The project is part of the planning and design framework launched by the municipal administration with the establishment of the “Permanent Observatory on Sustainable Mobility and the Quality of Living” (2022) and constitutes a fruitful synergy between public administration, university, local actors and external consultants. In the case of Ascoli Piceno, the backbone of this experience is the ‘Bici Plan’, currently in the design and participatory process phase. On this structural hypothesis, the spatial prefiguration and the outcome of an academic and participatory design reflection with local actors are inserted and anchored. In this space of thought, the terms of temporariness and permanence are no longer contrasting concepts but converging precisely in the original perspective of Short-term action/long-term change to image evolutionary scenarios between tactical urbanism and the space/time/project triad
