Austin will confer 240 degrees upon 232 graduates during commencement exercises June 18 at 2:30 p.m. in Spruance Plaza. Of the students graduating this term, 119 are U.S. Navy officers, 37 U.S. Army officers, 18 U.S. Air Force offi-cers, 16 U.S. Marine Corps officers, eight U.S. Coast Guard officers, seven civilian Department of Defense employees and 27 international officers. The degrees include 182 masters of science, 45 masters of arts, one bachelor of science, five mechanical engi-neers, two aeronautical engineers, one electrical engineer and four doctorate~ Thirty of the 240 degrees will be presented 11 with dis-tinction. 11 • The honorable Charles G. Untermeyer, Assistant Secretary ,_f the Navy, will be the guest speaker for the ceremony. Graduates and their guests are invited to attend the superintendent's reception in the ballroom following the ceremony. Capt. Smith receives Navy League Award One of nineteen graduates to be honored for outstanding academic performance and leadership qualities, Capt. Doug-las B. Smith, U.S. Marine Corps, will be presented with the Monterey Peninsula Council Navy League Award for Highest Academic Achievement. Beginning June 22, one member of the car poo 1 may register for the other members at the Securi-ty Office any ti me between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. A mi nu mum of three people is required in order to qualify for the use of a car pool space. One car pool parking permit will be is-sued for each car pool mem-bership. The NPS-La Mesa shuttle bus will not run during the summer break, June 22-July 3. Normal service will re-sume July 6. Tickets are available from the Recrea-tion Office or from the bus driver. NPS Little League Base-ball tryouts for the July through September season will be at the La Mesa field Saturday, July 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Only new pl ayers need attend. A Navy Junior Baseball League Fund Raiser will be at Tarantino's Pizza in Sea-side July 24. 2 From the Superintendent Comfog and Going 'Tis occasion for change at the Naval Postgraduate School. It's a change which comes around every three months as each class graduates and new officers report on board. But this change represents a period when some of the maxi mum numbers are leaving and entering the school. It is al so the occa-sion when we have 55 flag officers and senior civilians from more than 30 nations arriving for special summer courses in the Defense Resources Management Education Cen-ter. In the goings it is appropriate for me to express my pride, as I did last week, in the studies accomplished by each officer assigned to study here. That is not pride solely in the work that is done in Monterey -- it's an anticipatory type of pride, an anticipation that coupling these studies to future responsibilities will result in greatness. Greatness in the Navy, great-ness in the services that you're a part of, greatness in the defense of our nation, and an ability to effect peace and security in a troubled and sometimes violently stressed world. The coming of newly-reporting officers to the Naval Postgraduate School is equally important. They bring with them anticipa-tion, and a little apprehension, of hitting academics again after many years in an opera ti on al setting. Hills CHILO CARE COMING TO LA tiESA On July 6 the Child Development Center Annex will open in the La Mesa Community Center. The Annex is in response to the continued demand for part-time child care. It will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will be space at the Annex to accommodate 24 children ages three to 10. Al though the primary group will be three to 10 year olds, a 1 i mited number of two-year olds will be accepted at the Annex if the main Child Development Center is full and the child is toil et trained. To minimize the impact on other users of the Community Center and to keep costs low, the Annex operation will be kept as simple as possible. Due to the limited storage and washroom facilities in the building, there w i 11 be no hot meals, nap ti me, or di aper changing. There will, however, be a full range of activities for the children, a 1 i ght snack w i 11 be served, and parents will be permitted to bring a sack lunch for each child, if desired. Reservations for the Child Development Center Annex wi ll be taken at the Child Development Center (646-2734) beginning June 29. Reservation procedures will be identical to those utilized now, except t hat same day reservations or cane ell ations be made at the Annex (the phone number w~1 be published when known). Hourly cha r g""lf! for child care will be changing July 1 and will be the same for both locations ($1.50 per hour for the first child and $.75 an hour for each additional child). We sincerely hope that the Child Deve-lopment Center Annex will be responsive to community needs, and we invite .questions or suggestions. Two types of violation notices will be awarded depending on the type of violation and the number of previous violations. lhe Armed Forces Traffic Ticket (DD Form 1408) will be used as a warning ticket. lhe U.S. Magistrate Ticket (DD Form 1805) will require the violator to present himself to the U.S. Magi-strate -- and/or pay a minimum fine of $10.
