L., teacher at the Department of English for Engineering №2 National Technical University of Ukraine  “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” Kyiv, Ukraine  APPROACHES TO ENGLISH-LANGUAGE TEACHING IN HIGHER TECHNICAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION  Today, there is an increasing tendency towards the humanization of education in society, which manifests in the educational process’s orienta-tion towards the student's personality. According to N. Sidorenko, differentiation is one of the effective didactic means to ensure such  58 orientation [4]. J. Komenskiy, K. Ushinsky, and V. Sukhomlinsky pointed out the need to work in the classroom with students who have different levels of knowledge. A multilevel approach can be implemented only if there are enough teaching hours in our country. This makes it possible to determine foreign language proficiency and pass universal vocabulary in the first year of study. Then there is specialisation according to the chosen specialisation, with the selection of textbooks depending on the level of language proficiency. This approach to teaching is appropriate and methodologically sound. There have been many attempts to divide students according to proficiency level, i.e., apply the principle of differentiation. Thus, S. Milyutina calls level differentiation one of the progressive learning technologies, which involves “creating different learning conditions for different educational institutions taking into account students’ personali-ties” [2, p. 50]. However, there is a fundamental difference between the differentiated and tiered approaches to learning. The differentiated approach requires “establishing differentiated multidisciplinary and multilevel groups and providing an appropriate set of differentiated impacts on such groups” [4, p. 146]. The multilevel approach implies work within the same group, but the learning process is carried out through tasks of different levels of complexity. The main principles of this approach are: 1. preliminary definition of psychological and pedagogical readiness for learning; 2. involvement of all students of a separate group; 3. possibility to work with microgroups; 4. overcoming personal problems in the learning process. The principle of pre-determination of psychological and pedagogical readiness for learning requires creating a special questionnaire. In addition to psychological questions, it contains test questions to determine language proficiency. After the questionnaire, the teacher has data on the students’ readiness to teach, which will be further compared to the results obtained after applying a multilevel approach. The involvement of all students of  a particular group consists of the total involvement of students who can complete a feasible task. With a modular learning system and a rating system of assessment, students clearly understand their task – to master a certain amount of material and receive several points for it. By being aware of their capabilities, it is possible to determine the appropriate type of work. In this way, bias against the complexity of the task is removed. The possibility of working in micro-groups means that if several students have expressed a desire to take on the most challenging task, they can come together and help each other. Similarly, students are entitled to join together to tackle an easier task. The principle of overcoming personal problems in the learning process requires the teacher to take care of the student’s  59 personality. Often reluctance to learn a foreign language is due to aversion to the teacher. The approach to teaching in different degrees of complexity of the teaching material allows students to have a positive attitude and form  a desire to improve the level of knowledge with a real appreciation of it. So, we can conclude that the main principles of organization of multi-level approach to learning are: the principles of a preliminary determination of psychological and pedagogical readiness and level of language prepara-tion for learning, involvement of all students of a separate group, the possibility of work in micro-groups and overcoming of personal problems. Along with the learning process, an educational influence on the personality is carried out, increasing the students’ self-esteem and encouraging self-improvement.  Literature: 1. Кушнір, М. (2001).
