The extended library hours may require additional funding. Therefore, it needs to be clearly defined that a significant number of students will __ uti lize these services to make it feasible . As our fo r mer Circulation Services Supervisor stated dur i ng our i n itial review of a sim i lar ASG Reso l utj.on in June 1989 , no librarian worthy of the name would be aga i nst providing services to the COllstituency they serve , but the realities of the situation must be faced . Dr . Marv Leavy, Reference Services Superv i sor , and ~1 rs . Li nda Morr i ssett , Circulation Services Supervisor , pa r ticipated in the rev i ew . Dr . Leavy noted t hat t he extension of serv i ce hours could not be accomplished without addit i onal assistance . Mrs. Morrissett re i tera t ed that the budget for students and exit checkers is already very tight . Presently we are not abl e to schedule a full - time person at the Cravens Circulation Desk on Saturday afternoon . As Mr . Harley Brooks , former Ci r culat i on Serv i ces Superv i sor noted earlier , our budget is so tight that if we were to be open the requested hours we would have to cut serv i ce somewhere else , a dec i s i on not easily made . I t appears that the supervisors and I agree with you and Dr . Robert Haynes , Vi ce Pres i dent for Academic Affairs , tha t these extended hours should not be implemented without the requ i red add i t i onal s t affing -- because our personnel resources are already stretche'd to the limi.t. Requj.rements for add i tional staff i ng , with breakdown on costs, to achieve the purpose stated i n the resolution , are listed in the Cost Estima t e . Two student ass i.stants are needed at each Helm- Cravens service point (Reference , Circulation, Per i od i cals , and Government Serv i ces) and three student patrollers to assure security for patrons and workers . One exit checker for the Helm Library exit wi ll be needed . One part - time Library Assistant or Li brar i an is required , depending on the level of service to be offered . Extended Hours llf2BfB9 Page We will require computer support and Mr . Curtis Logsdon , Computer and Informational Services Director , noted that he would need a student who was experienced -qnd could handle the job alone. \ ! The overall sentiment of library supervisors and Mr . Logsdon was that the proposed extension is possible but difficult including the thorny problem of finding persons who would want to work both weekend nights. As one Supervisor noted , the students will expect service . We cannot just "open " the Library ! , It is also difficult to predict what patron response would be to the extended hours . Included in this review is documentation , recent information including turnstile , - » reference , and circulation statistics for Friday (noon to closing) and all of Saturday and Sunday for three recent weekends . We have also included the number of students in Helm- Cravens counted during the proposed extended hours for several Exam Week late hour schedules . No real use pattern is i ndicated and only a " trial run " with an extended hours schedule wi ll determine the demand for the proposed increase of services . The Associated Student Government is to be compljmented on its concern for WKU students and their need for quiet study and li.brary materials . Sally Ann Strickler. Department Head of Library Public Services, to conduct a "f easibi lity and requirements" review (see attached) To summarize Dr Str i ckler ' s review, achieving this purpose is possible with the add i tion of staff at k ey service points Her re vi ew includes a breakdown on the cost of extending the current weekend closing hours of Helm - Cravens Library from •• 5 : 30 p . m . to 10 : 00 p . m . on Friday and Satu r day evenings. as addressed in the ASG resolution Please note that the total cost of $7.135 (per semeste r) identi fied by Dr Strickler includes the requirement of computer support for our library automati o n system . Also. whil e two options for a "ni ght supervisor " are shown. our preference is for a profess ional librarian to oversee the facility and also prov i de a ran ge of reference services. It is likely that this extension of library hours could no t take effect. for budgetary reasons. before Fall Semester 1990 Dr .
