Originals and photocopies.  2008.205.1   BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE   Leland Ross Johnson was born on 01 November 1937 to Clifford Albert (1909-2001) and Neva Doris (Baccus) Johnson (1919-1993) near Metropolis, Illinois. He graduated high school in 1964 from Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, Missouri. He continued his education and received degrees from Murray State University, St. Louis University, and received a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He specialized in engineering technology history, and his studies and publications help chronicle the work of the Army Corps of Engineers in the Ohio River Valley. Dr. Johnson was an authority on the history of rivers and engineering, and has published more than 30 accounts on the subject. He was awarded the Toulmin Medal three times by the Society of American Military Engineers.        COLLECTION NOTE    This collection consists chiefly of information from the National Archives, newspaper and magazine articles related to the James Gang robbery at Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The collection contains photocopies of the original affidavits (1881), correspondence between government officials (1881), Johnson’s correspondence and notes (1970-1972), and photocopies of newspaper articles (1867-1998).
