Originals and photocopies.  SC2013.114.1   COLLECTION NOTE    This collection contains correspondence, legal records, and other miscellaneous material from three related families:  Standrod, Carmichael, and Campbell.  Box 1, Folder 1 contains some biographical and genealogical information about the families and how they are related.  Box 1 consists chiefly of material from the Standrod and Campbell families and Box 2 contains material related to the Carmichael family.  Folders 2 and 3 of Box 1 contain information related to the extraction of asphalt at Kyrock, Edmonson County, Kentucky.  This operation, known commercially as Kyrock, was headed by Henry St. George Tucker Carmichael, Sr.  Folder 2 is chiefly financial reports related to the operation, and the loose leaf book in Folder 3 relates to road construction.  Folders 4-16 contain correspondence, legal papers and financial records of various members of the Standrod family.  The majority of the papers belonged to Samuel Ewing Standrod and his wife Dora of Trigg County, Kentucky.  Folder 12 contains some correspondence of interest related to Drew William Standrod, Jr. (1891-1936) and a short-lived job he had with the Cuban –American Sugar Company in 1919.  Folder 14 contains several letters to D.W. Standrod (1859-1942) from an Ab Emerson (through William Burnett) of Brazos, Texas, requesting information about a “woman of color” drowning victim on the Cumberland River in 1868 which Mr. Emerson believed was his wife.  Mr. Standrod moved to Pocatello, Idaho in 1895, where he worked as an attorney (eventually a judge) and as a farmer/rancher on the side.  In folders 14 and 15 he provides interesting information about his farming, ranching, vocational, and political activities in Idaho as he writes to his uncle and namesake Drew W. and his wife, Catherine Frances “Fannie” Standrod.  The young D.W. was in Idaho during its transition from a territory to a state and served in its constitutional convention.  His wife, Eve Emma Van Warmer Standrod writes a fascinating letter to D.W. and Fannie in 1894 in which she describes the murder of Morgan W. Morgan, a former ranching partner of D.W.’s.  Fannie Standrod was the daughter of William Campbell.  Folder 17 contains letters written to William Campbell and Folder 18 includes receipts and a claim made after the Civil War for compensation of a slave that joined the Union army.  Box 2 consists chiefly of correspondence amongst various members of the Carmichael family, primarily the immediate family of Henry (Harry) St. George Tucker Carmichael, Sr. (1882-1949) and his two wives Anna L. Hetzel Carmichael (1886-1920) and Lalla Rookh 2  MSS 467 Manuscripts & Folklife Archives – Special Collections Library – Western Kentucky University  (Standrod) Carmichael (1895?-1966).  Folder 1 contains information about Henry and Lalla’s oldest son Standrod Tucker Carmichael (1924-2001), including letters to his parents while a student at Kentucky Military Institute in Lyndon, Kentucky and two informative Christmas letters. Standrod became a Episcopal priest.  Folders 2 and 4 include affectionate letters written by Henry, Sr. to his sons while they were in away at school, as well as letters containing information about the Standrod farm in Cadiz, Kentucky.  A good deal of this correspondence displays heavy insect damage.  Folder 3 contains a report for the Bowling Green District of the American Red Cross dated 1934.  Folder 5 includes letters to Lalla Carmichael from family members; from mothers of Delta Tau Delta fraternity members at Washington & Lee University, where she served as house mother from 1952 to 1953; and from her nephew, Drew William Standrod (1892-1972).  Folders 6-11 contain correspondence (Folder 6), pilot logs (Folder 9), military records (Folders 10-11), vacation journals (Folder 7), and journalism class notes from Washington & Lee University, 1948 (Folder 8), of John Craig Carmichael (1928-2002) and his wife Sara Alice (Booher) Carmichael (b. 1930).  Folder 11 contains partial and miscellaneous items, including a piece of stationery featuring a road map of Cincinnati, Ohio,  along with drawings of several of that city’s major structures and a view of the Ohio River from approximately 1850, a membership certificate to Kappa Alpha Order for John Randolph Tucker Carmichael dated 1931, and a small bank book that belonged to Samuel E. Standrod which contains formulas for medical prescriptions.
