Originals, typescript.  1985.187.1   BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE    James Monroe Matlock, the son of Absolom Moore Matlock and Hannah Moore, was born on 18 July 1818 in Warren County, Kentucky and died 19 January 1903 in Logan County, Kentucky.  In 1848, he married Elizabeth Mary Summers (1827-1906).  Among their children were Rial H. Matlock (1850-1898) and Joseph Robert Matlock (1860-1934).  James Monroe Matlock and several other members of the family are buried in New Friendship Cemetery, Logan County, Kentucky.   COLLECTION NOTE    This collection contains personal papers, mostly tax receipts and deeds, of the Matlock family of Logan County, Kentucky.  A few stray materials, mostly deeds and a travel journal, relate to other families or to unidentified individuals.        Genealogical notes on the Matlock family are in Folder 2.  Folder 3 contains various personal papers of James Monroe Matlock, including a receipt for the hire of slaves, a bill of sale for a slave woman and child, an insurance policy for horse theft, a masonic life insurance policy, and correspondence regarding Matlock’s unsuccessful claim for loss of a horse during the Civil War.  Folder 4 contains surveys and deeds, most relating to lands of James Monroe Matlock in Logan County, Kentucky.  Folder 5 contains a travel journal (and typescript) kept by Eleanor Death of Suffolk, England detailing a trip she took to London.  Both the calendar in the journal and her mentions of the “Exhibition” suggest that she visited in the summer of 1851 during the Great Exhibition at London’s Crystal Palace, although an entry for “Monday, June 14” seems to place her there in 1852.  Folder 6 contains mostly tax receipts of James Monroe Matlock.  Also included are documents in connection with Matlock’s bond for the performance as constable of W. A. Matlock.  Folder 7 contains railroad tax receipts of James Monroe Matlock and other Matlock family members.  Folder 8 contains tax receipts of James Monroe Matlock, his son Rial Matlock, and other Matlock family members.
