Originals and photocopies.  2002.74.2   BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE  Marietta Mansfield was born on 4 January 1917 in Oakland, Kentucky to Reuben Henry and Blanche Maude (Poole) Mansfield.  She attended schools in Warren County and graduated in 1933, whereupon she enrolled at Lindsey Wilson College.  She later matriculated at Kentucky Wesleyan College, where received her Bachelor’s degree in 1942.  In 1961 she earned a Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt University.  A Doctorate of Divinity degree was conferred upon her by Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1997.  Mansfield began her career as a Christian missionary to India in 1944, where she supervised village schools, directed a literacy program, and oversaw health care for nine hundred villages.  Stricken with polio, which paralyzed her for eight months, she returned to the United States for further treatment.  She suffered from post-polio syndrome the rest of her life, which left her muscles weak and made breathing and swallowing difficult.  She was ordained in India in 1956 and was received into full connection in the former Louisville Annual Conference in 1962, the first woman to be ordained an Elder in Kentucky.  Her ministry in Kentucky spanned 23 years.  She served as pastor of the following churches:  McDowell Chapel Methodist Church in Brooks, Kentucky, First Methodist Church of Cloverport, Glendale United Methodist Church and Walker Memorial Methodist Church in Louisville.  Her appointments also included establishing the chaplaincy program at Louisville’s Wesley Manor Retirement Community in 1977.  She authored articles about her family’s heritage and a book titled Jeremiah Osborn of Hampshire County, (West) Virginia.  In addition she authored a pamphlet published by the Woman’s Division of the Methodist Church titled “When You Visit the Sick.”  Mansfield served as president of the International Association of Women Ministers from 1966 to 1970.  As president she represented women clergy at the Congress of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women meeting in Washington, D.C. in 1966.  Most of Mansfield’s papers relating to her pastoral career are located at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Kentucky.  Mansfield died on 22 December 2003 in Louisville and was interred in that city’s Cave Hill Cemetery. 2  MSS 426 Manuscripts & Folklife Archives – Special Collections Library – Western Kentucky University  COLLECTION NOTE   The bulk of this collection consists of genealogical materials amassed by Marietta Mansfield for the publication of her book, Jeremiah Osborn of Hampshire County, (West) Virginia (2001).  The Osborn and Mansfield families are the chief family names covered, but significant information about the Pool (Poole, Pettypoole, Claypool), Kinslow, and families is also included.  Smaller amounts of information is included for auxiliary families.  Most of the content is photocopied material.  Within each family, the material was sorted in the following manner:  correspondence, family group sheets, photocopied documents, and research notes.  In the major family groups, each of these categories might consist of several folders.  Within auxiliary family folders, these divisions are marked with blank sheets of paper.  Generally only Mansfield’s contemporary correspondence is original; most of the older material in the collection consists of photocopies.  The Haines family correspondence, between relatives in Warren County, Kentucky and Haines family members in Bonham, Texas, is of particular interest as they discuss living conditions in Texas during the 1870s.  The collection also includes a small about of biographical material after Mansfield, including a few news clippings (Folders 1 & 6), letters and newsletters sent while a missionary in India (Folder 4), and general correspondence (Folder 2).  A small amount of material on female clergy can be found in Folder 7.  All staples, paper clips and other metal fasteners have been removed and replaced with coated paper clips.  The collection has been placed in acid free folders and boxes.  A small amount of material on acidic paper was photocopied on acid free paper.  Photographs were transferred to the Special Collections Library.  Mansfield’s book on Jeremiah Osborn is also housed in the Special Collections Library (CS 71 .O815 2001).
